Marly Rynnow (Pier warden): Comes to the Inn to find you in the morning
Marly Rynnow (Pier warden): (it is the 19th)
Marly Rynnow (Pier warden): I hope you had a good evening?
Inv Zora Polasis: Yes thank you
Ratbone Carder: rubbing her own head
Inv Zora Polasis: It was nice to be on land and off the ship
Ratbone Carder: I still feel a little strange
Marly Rynnow (Pier warden): The Potentate would like to see you this morning, she has several funerals to attend to
MeLange: why so many funerals?
Inv Zora Polasis: The people killed by the sahuagin I presume
Marly Rynnow (Pier warden): For the defenders who died fighting the shark folk
MeLange: Oh right, that makes sense, I thought maybe it was something else...
MeLange: like a plague or something
Inv Zora Polasis: Julia is presiding. She invited us for a service
Vee Barlett: Yar yous was too busy with, er, tummy issues when it happened.
MeLange: my tummy has been an issue
MeLange: trying to get more yogurt in my diet
Inv Zora Polasis: I'm sorry for that
MeLange: oh thanks
MeLange smiles
MeLange: beautiful day for a few funerals I say
Inv Zora Polasis: We should probably not keep your mother waiting Marly
MeLange: fair, don't want to be rude
Vee Barlett: Yar lead the way. We got a good sleep.
Marly Rynnow (Pier warden): Very glad
Ratbone Carder: nodding
Marly Rynnow (Pier warden): She leads you through town to a large stone building near the center of town
MeLange: follows
The appointment with the Potentate takes place in a large stone building located near the center of Angleburg. The building is decorated with fanciful sculptures of sea nymphs, dolphins, and fish of fantastic size attempting to swallow elaborate galleons of fanciful design. The group is led down a long hall, past various town official's offices on either side, to a large conference chamber in the rear of the building. The conference chamber is fairly stark, but elegantly so. A large wooden table holds enough chairs for all, as well as two additional chairs where two people sit, a boy and a woman. On the wall behind the two, a large map of Angler Island is displayed. The table is bare except for a single small statuette carved of some greenish stone (serpentine). As the group enters, the woman, apparently in her forties, stands and introduces herself as Potentate Kara Rynnow. She is dressed in sea-green robes and wears many pieces of tasteful coral and pearl jewelry.
Kara Rynnow (Potentate): Hello, Thank you for meeting with me
Vee Barlett: Good to meetcha, er, Potentate?
Vee Barlett: Love the decorations. Thems pretty.
Glimber Silvernose: bows
Ratbone Carder: bows
Kara Rynnow (Potentate): It if very fortuitous that you arrived as you did
Kara Rynnow (Potentate): My daughter tells me you were very helpful in fending off the most recent attack by the sea devils
Inv Zora Polasis: Glad to have been able to assist
Vee Barlett: Well theys was attacking our ship.
Kara Rynnow (Potentate): We lost 6 men, it would have been worse without you
Vee Barlett: Yer daughter said they only recently been attackin?
MeLange: hmm
MeLange nods
Kara Rynnow (Potentate): 20 percent of our guards gone in one attack, I am not certain how many more we can fend off
Kara Rynnow (Potentate): Two months ago the island trembled in the grip of a seaquake born in the depths. A great wave followed, but the cliffs and strait of Halfmoon Bay protected Angleburg from severe inundation. The effects of the quake not only create the great ocean wave but also opened a chasm near the center of the island, at the base of the Near Downs.
Vee Barlett: What them things want anyways?
MeLange: what inside the chasm?
Kara Rynnow (Potentate): As if an omen of trouble to follow, the next week was one of unsurpassed fishing, bringing record catches; never had the waters seemed so generous with marine bounty. With nets bursting, I gave thoughts to the new fissure on the mainland. The salvager Lychelle took my commission to take her team into the chasm; this serpentine figure was brought out right before the sea devils boiled up out of the sea!
Kara Rynnow (Potentate): Sahuagin! Long have I feared them, but all my sea surveillance assured me that the nearest habitation of the shark folk was far, far from here ... but they are here now! Perhaps the recent bounty of fish has drawn the foul devil-men from their normal watery hunting grounds?
Kara Rynnow (Potentate): Whatever their origin, this evil tide must end! Half our fishing fleet has been scuttled, and the average fisher avoids putting to sea, fearing a sahuagin attack on the open water-and rightly so. Our supplies dwindle, and the sea-devil incursions grow bolder with each passing tide. Will you help me put an end to these raids?
Inv Zora Polasis: Can't you give them back the figurine?
Kara Rynnow (Potentate): We cannot reason with them
Vee Barlett: Why?
Kara Rynnow (Potentate): When Lychelle disappeared in the cave in
MeLange: 'plenty of fish in the sea!' ... people say
The chasm collapsed five days ago, and the excavators probably died quickly.
MeLange: really think all that was over a bunch of fish?
Kara Rynnow (Potentate): Did you manage to reason with them when they attacked your ship?
Vee Barlett: Yar no surprise. Underground be horrid.
Vee Barlett: Well they did stop attackin' when we stabbed them enough.
MeLange: well that's good, they got some sense
Vee Barlett: Every capture one? Maybe get it to talk?
Kara Rynnow (Potentate): All of our able bodied people have been brought here to guard the docks
Kara Rynnow (Potentate): We no not understand their foul language
Vee Barlett: Well can't get far if'n ya ain't communicatin'
Kara Rynnow (Potentate): As you said they listen to your swords
Ratbone Carder: How do you know they are swearing?
Ratbone Carder: I mean, yes, they are angry, they probably are.
Vee Barlett: Trident.
Inv Zora Polasis: If the attacks began after the scavenger expedition, they probably want their things back
Kara Rynnow (Potentate): If you can investigate the collapsed cavern, my people can guard the docks
Kara Rynnow (Potentate): We do not have any of their things that I know of, except this statuette
Ratbone Carder: gestures OBVIOUSLY
Kara Rynnow (Potentate): But I am certain that there is more in the caves that they are looking for
Kara Rynnow (Potentate): Why else would they be attacking us?
Inv Zora Polasis: So the plan is to return their things to them to stop the attacks, correct?
Ratbone Carder: 1 revenge for collapsing the caves. 2. anger that you're taking all the fish 3 you've got their jade goddess
Inv Zora Polasis: nods at Ratbone
Vee Barlett: Dunno but I hate caves.
Kara Rynnow (Potentate): I will gladly reward you with 100 choice pearls that have been already harvested
Ratbone Carder: I mean we know you didn't collapse the caves but do they know that
Glimber Silvernose: I like caves!
Kara Rynnow (Potentate): We did not collapse the caves,
Kara Rynnow (Potentate): There are more fish now then before the seaquake
Kara Rynnow (Potentate): They did not attack us then
Kara Rynnow (Potentate): Only a rare encounter
Ratbone Carder: wanna bet the quake broke their fisheries?
Vee Barlett: And just takin' it as a blessin' rather than find out why there be more fish?
Kara Rynnow (Potentate): Something has awakened them to haunt us
Vee Barlett: Any of yous people captured?
Kara Rynnow (Potentate): None that I know of but Lychelle is missing
Vee Barlett: Who?
Kara Rynnow (Potentate): I have to presume she is dead
Inv Zora Polasis: The scavenger
Kara Rynnow (Potentate): She is the one who initially went to investigate the caves when they opened up
Kara Rynnow (Potentate): I know she had others with her, you should ask her father ulogar
Vee Barlett: Oh. We just noticed them shark guys seemed to be tryin' to capture not kill necessarily.
Glimber Silvernose: Probably to eat me!
Vee Barlett: Well probably. You is bite sized.
Vee Barlett: Maybe savin' you for dessert.
Glimber Silvernose: frowns
Temperance: The important thing is that they didn't.
Temperance: smiles lightly and pats Glimber on the shoulder.
Kara Rynnow (Potentate): If you agree to go investigate I can give you this statuette if you think it will help you in the caves
Glimber Silvernose: looks up at Tempe and smiles
Kara Rynnow (Potentate): I am more worried about my people than statues
Vee Barlett: Yar but why not just go fer the kill? Why capture?
Vee Barlett: I hate caves.
Vee Barlett: I got seawater in me blood, not dirt.
Kara Rynnow (Potentate): That is why it is a Godsend that you arrived when you did
Kara Rynnow (Potentate): It has been five days already
Vee Barlett: And the gods sent ya someone who hates caves. I ain't sure how this a godsend.
Glimber Silvernose: thinks if we hadn't gone to Seagate first we would have arrived in the middle of the mess
Kara Rynnow (Potentate): Perhaps you are here to solve our problems quickly so you can return to the sea
Vee Barlett: That a threat?
Kara Rynnow (Potentate): A threat? what do you mean?
Vee Barlett: I can just grab me ship and leave now, yeah?
Inv Zora Polasis: I think she is simply making us an offer Vee
Vee Barlett: Oh. That be weird. It's threats I'm used to...
Inv Zora Polasis: We could help because she needs help
Inv Zora Polasis: Like Hiero ...
Inv Zora Polasis: sighs
Temperance: gives Zora a sympathetic pat.
Vee Barlett: Sure but I like rewards. Gold. Rings so I can breath underwater. Ya know, motivation.
Kara Rynnow (Potentate): I will be glad to offer up 100 pearls if you can at least bring back reliable information about what is in the caves. Perhaps you can find something that will stop this evil tide.
Inv Zora Polasis: We've been offered pearls
Vee Barlett: ESPECIALLY if caves be involved. I'm gonna have to start chargin' for cave divin' 'cause it ain't the kinda divin' I like.
MeLange: ohhh pearls lovely
Kara Rynnow (Potentate): If you need assistance, I can send Nod (points to the young man in the corner) with you to go to his master's house. Laurish Samprey is a Wizard who lives on the north point of the island
Vee Barlett: What supply you provide us? I ain't usin' me own resources to explore yer caves.
MeLange: whoa the wizard will come with us?
Kara Rynnow (Potentate): I do not have anything to offer other than a reward, all of my resources are being used to protect our island from these attacks
Temperance: raises her brows as she listens.
Inv Zora Polasis: We have supplies
Vee Barlett: pinches her brow
Inv Zora Polasis: This wizard might have items that may help us in the caves?
Vee Barlett: You give us pearls. You ain't chargin' us for sleepin' or dockin'. We here free, yeah? And maybe we talk more reward when we come back, yeah? 'Cause that a sad reward for a cave dive.
Nod (Human): Softly. He is a powerful wizard, he can do many things. He is old and does not like to leave his tower
Inv Zora Polasis: It would be good to meet him then. He must have much knowledge
MeLange: ah oh well
Inv Zora Polasis: nods at Nod
MeLange disappointed
Nod (Human): Nods, slight smile
Nod (Human): I can take you there now if you like,
MeLange: yea I’d like that!
Kara Rynnow (Potentate): Or you could take them to Lychelle's on the way Nod
Vee Barlett: Who got rum? 'Cause I'm gonna need a lot of it.
Inv Zora Polasis: Lychelle's father would be helpful too
MeLange: His name is Nod?
Ratbone Carder: {singing} vee needs rum! in her tummy tum tum. because it's no fun. in the caaaaAAAAAAAaaaves!
Temperance: muffles a laugh.
Kara Rynnow (Potentate): Looks at Ratbone and gives a brief nod
Ratbone Carder: [signing] we don't wanna die, but we'll give it a try. it's not like we can fly. in the caaaaaAAAAAAAAaaaves!
Vee Barlett: The caves where people disappeared.
Vee Barlett: But sure, let's send them random strangers in there.
Vee Barlett: grumbles
Temperance: jots down a document summarising the exchange.
Kara Rynnow (Potentate): Random heroes who helped defend our town
Vee Barlett: Heroism ain't worth shit. You better hope them pearls are.
Temperance: A journey to the caves.... rewards up to 100 pearls... more to be discussed.....
Temperance: mumbles to herself.
Kara Rynnow (Potentate): If you can help with the caves, I can hold off the attacks. I have not seen them this persistent before but we have weathered them in the past
MeLange: hopefully the pearls are worth more than shit though
Vee Barlett: They will be. I always collect my dues.
MeLange: Do you think any of use should stay back and help them with the attacks?
Marly Rynnow (Pier warden): I would appreciate it
Vee Barlett: I need ya in the caves.
Marly Rynnow (Pier warden): But I have managed the attacks so far
Marly Rynnow (Pier warden): The sea devils seem to come in on high tides
MeLange: Just checkin', sorry we don't have more people for ya
Marly Rynnow (Pier warden): Not every time but often
Vee Barlett: Then we leave the caves before high tide.
Vee Barlett: I ain't got no plan to stay in them long.
Inv Zora Polasis: sighs
Temperance: jots that down too.
Marly Rynnow (Pier warden): I wish I had gone with Lychelle
Inv Zora Polasis: We shall do our best to help
Temperance: Ideally, leave before high tide...
Vee Barlett: She will. I ain't promisin' nothin'.
MeLange: Lychelle Lychelle... you don't let that one go
Inv Zora Polasis: Oh don't say that. You might not still be here if you had Marly
Marly Rynnow (Pier warden): Please do what you can to find her
MeLange: Yea I'm sure you made the right decision, nice name is all, poetic in its sound
Inv Zora Polasis: We will
Marly Rynnow (Pier warden): It has been five days, I know there is little hope, but
MeLange: You never know till you know, you know
Temperance: hums in agreement with Melange.
and Nod is ready to lead you to where you want to go
Temperance: Never know until you try, I suppose.
Vee Barlett: looking at the statuette

The carving is a small humanoid shape, very worn, almost smooth, it must be centuries old
Vee Barlett: wonders how much it would sell for
Temperance: tucks her papers and quill back in her pouch.
Inv Zora Polasis: Vee!
Vee Barlett: Yar? Just lookin' and thinkin' of them island stories I heard is all.
Vee Barlett: Ain't ringin' bells. Guess we better go see... whoever.
Inv Zora Polasis: It doesn't seem magical does it?
Vee Barlett: Just old.
Inv Zora Polasis: Maybe Lychelles' father know more about her expedition
Inv Zora Polasis: To help us find her
Vee Barlett: Lead the way, Investigator. 'Cause you partly why we now in this mess.
Inv Zora Polasis: Me?
Inv Zora Polasis: It's not my fault
Temperance: walks behind and shuffles out a snack to eat.
Vee Barlett: Uh huh, sure. Ya all... goody goody and stuff
Inv Zora Polasis: Oh how could you say no? The island is under attack and we could help
Vee Barlett: Easy. I get on me ship and go. And if'n ya wasn't here no one would say a thing.
Inv Zora Polasis: And a single pearl could be worth hundreds of gold. It is a good reward
Vee Barlett: It better be.
Inv Zora Polasis: 100 pearls
Vee Barlett: grumbles
Temperance: But the important thing is we are now “in this mess.” We might as well make the best of it, right?
Inv Zora Polasis: Exactly Temperance!
Temperance: smiles as she swallows her food.
Inv Zora Polasis: smiles
Vee Barlett: It has caves. Why ain't it open sea or somethin' fun? Why do caves be my curse?
Ratbone Carder: strummy strum strumm
Vee Barlett: I ain't Levi, gods damn his soul.
Nod (Human): Quietly, Lychelle's Shop is down in the market, please come with me
Inv Zora Polasis: Yes please
Inv Zora Polasis: follows
Temperance: Who knows, maybe you were destined for caves, Vee.
Temperance: shrugs.
Vee Barlett: Well I am gonna ask Pa or Dad if they made some damned deal that cursed me as such.
Inv Zora Polasis: laughs
Nod (Human): Nod takes you back to the town square and past the church where the funerals are happening
Ratbone Carder: picking out a jaunty tune on the lute
Nod (Human): Then down a block to Lychelle's Shop.
Ratbone Carder: Changing to a somber tune
There is an older man sitting dejected on the porch, turning a small shell over and over in his hands
Inv Zora Polasis: Good morning
MeLange: Nice shell!
Temperance: takes out her quill.
Vee Barlett: Ahoy.
Ulogar: Looks up
Ratbone Carder: bows
Ulogar: Hello
Ulogar: Oh hello Nod
Temperance: offers a bow of greeting.
Ulogar: SIGHS
MeLange Nods
Vee Barlett: That be a big sigh.
Ulogar: I have to get ready to go try to find my daughter
Ulogar: ”I go up each day and dig as best as I can, but I'm y one old man, and it's cursed slow work. Everyone else around here is so wrapped up in this sea devil business that they've no time to help an old man find out what's become of his poor daughter and her friends! Can you young-uns help me discover Lychelle’s fate?”
Inv Zora Polasis: We have been given that task as well as to help stop the sahuagin attacks
Ulogar: Thank the Gods
Inv Zora Polasis: What can you tell us about her expedition that might help us find her?
Inv Zora Polasis: How many people were with her?
Ulogar: If you can give me any sort of resolution I will be glad to give you some of the statues she uncovered
Temperance: gets ready to jot some notes on her limited parchment.
Vee Barlett: More statues?
Ratbone Carder: some statues? there were more?
MeLange: How old is your daughter? probably like middle aged right?
Ulogar: ”Lychelle was always an overly curious lass, even when just a child. As an adult, she refuses to take up the honorable profession of fishing or sea-trade which supports us on Angler Island; instead she captains a small salvage boat, attempting to make her way by reclaiming treasures seized by the waves. Bad luck, that. I told her a thousand times if I told her once: the sea doesn't like to give up its secrets. When news of that new chasm opening up in the hills reached Lychelle, she immediately gathered her crew - all those impetuous gallivanting friends of hers, don't know what she sees in them-and rushed off to investigate.”
Ulogar: She is about your age, maybe just a bit older
Ulogar: ”Anyway, she found a bunch of sea caves which apparently run below the island. Many of the caves are drowned in sea water, but some few of them apparently drain with the low tide at midnight, allowing Lychelle to access them safely. Almost immediately, 'chelle discovered strange bunches of little statues carved in green stone half-buried in the walls floors of the caverns. They must have been very, very old to come to be encased in the stone that way. No one around here could even begin to guess at where they came from, or who carved them. Worn as they were, they were like nothing I ever seen before, and I've traveled a fair bit in my time. Lychelle speculated that they might be artifacts of the drowned city of Carsall or even relics of the legendary land of Lunia, said to lie along the coast of the fabled Silver Sea.”
Ulogar: Not that I have ever heard of those places
Inv Zora Polasis: Exciting prospects
MeLange: Whoa that sounds amazing!
Inv Zora Polasis: And none of her crew returned either?
Vee Barlett: Drowned cities sounds more fun than caves...
Ulogar: ”Excited, Lychelle formed a team of excavators to remove as many of the objects as could be reached above the water line. Then disaster struck, and the opening to the chasm collapsed while 'chelle and a team of excavators were below, in the sea caverns! Soon as I learned the news, I began to assemble a team to dig out the delvers. But as my cursed luck would have it, it was that very day that a band of sahuagin breached the bay and began to scuttle the fishing fleet and slay any citizens of Angleburg whose misfortune it was to be too close to the docks!”
Ulogar: Every day I go up and try to dig but there is only so much I can do
MeLange: Oh that is bad luck
Vee Barlett: So the entrance be collapsed? So then how we gettin' in?
MeLange: so we dig then? right?
MeLange: She could still be alive
Ulogar: I can give you these statues so you can compare them when you are there
MeLange: Why would we want to compare them?
Ulogar: To the ones that are still there, to know you are in the right areas where Lychelle was investigating
MeLange: Oh ok that makes sense
Vee Barlett: I'm a Captain of them Seas not... a statue comparer.
Vee Barlett: But we gotta dig... what kinda deal is this?
MeLange: Sometimes you gotta row, other times you gotta dig
Vee Barlett: Or there an entrance when them tides right? 'Cause diggin' makin' me really hate goin' into caves.
Nod (Human): Maybe Laurish can help
MeLange Nods
Nod (Human): I can take you by the Chasm on the way to the Last House
Vee Barlett: Yar hope he can help.
Inv Zora Polasis: Thank you
The chasm opened up at the feet of the Near Downs in the violent shaking caused by the recent seaquake (the seaquake was precipitated by the machinations of the Deep Mother mentioned by Museio). Direct investigation of the site reveals a depression like a sink-hole some 20 feet wide near the top but narrowing to only a few feet in diameter near the 15-foot-deep floor, which is composed of packed rock and sand. Scattered around the collapsed chasm are various items related to excavation, including shovels, picks, brushes, and drop cloths. There is a large abandoned tent where the excavators apparently rested; it contains nothing other than rather forlorn-looking abandoned personal belongings. It should be abundantly clear to adventurers that Ulogar's efforts have produced very little effect.
Everyone tries to take a look at the chasm.

Vee Barlett: takes a bit whiff of dirt and starts coughing wildly.
Temperance: hands her a water jug.
MeLange: whoa vee!
MeLange: pats her on the back
Vee Barlett: Ugh. I hate it here. We done yet? Or any of ya see anythin' ....less borin'?
MeLange: there there
Inv Zora Polasis: Maybe we should come back later
MeLange: wanna make it less borin just imagine everyone naked
Vee Barlett: coughs and nods
Inv Zora Polasis: laughs
MeLange: pats Vee on the back again
MeLange: there there
Nod (Human): Over at the Lake House they get water from the Crystal Springs Lake, where the Crystal Falls are. They put it in jugs and sell it in town if you need more water
Nod (Human): Are you ready to go see the Last House?
Temperance: I'm sure she'll go for a swim to balance it all out later.
MeLange: is it special water?
MeLange: I mean must be right?
Vee Barlett: Yar if there somewhere to swim I'm game.
MeLange: I could go for a dip
Temperance: So, Last House?
MeLange: very last one
Nod (Human): Crystal Springs Lake is fed from below by a natural spring of the same name. The water is clear, clean, and cold. Much of it pools to form the lake, but the overflow constantly washes over the cliff to the west, forming the magnificent Crystal Falls, visible many miles from the shores of Angler Island. The Lake House next to the lake is where the Water Bearers' Guild jars the water in clay pots, selling them down in the market in large quantities.
Inv Zora Polasis: This is where the mage lives?
Nod (Human): No, Laurish lives at the Last House
MeLange: Wow that sounds delicious!
Nod (Human): Built on the edge of Dolphin's Point, the Last House looks 800 feet down a sheer cliff to the crashing waves of the sea. The Fathomer Laurish Samprey makes the lower levels of this 5-room lighthouse his home (his apprentice Nod also lives here).
MeLange: Boy I hope we get to try some Crystal Springs
MeLange: He made it sound so good
Nod (Human): We can visit there after we see the wizard
Vee Barlett: Yar.
Inv Zora Polasis: Laurish who may help getting us into the chasm
Ratbone Carder: strumming the lute
MeLange: works for me!
MeLange smiles
MeLange: Wizard and a crystal springs in one day
Temperance: A nice schedule, indeed.
The time is 9:28 AM
The date is Fin____tre, 19th Sin (Late Summer), 589 SGR
Young Moon's phase is Waning Gibbous
Old Moon's phase is Evening Crescent
You all arrive at the base of the lighthouse

MeLange: [SKILL] Alertness [MOD:WIS] (vs. Target 10) [SUCCESS by 6] [d20 = 4]

Fathomer cordially invites the party into an eccentrically-decorated room at the base of the lighthouse. Here are sights to warm any sea-lover's heart: oddly-shaped aquariums filled with all manner of sea-life, stuffed swordfish and small sharks, and windows that look just like portholes offering a view over the cliff. They will find Laurish Samprey a grizzled old fellow who smells of salt and dresses more like a sea captain than a wizard; whenever the topic turns to anything sea-related, Samprey waxes poetic with purple prose. They'll also get to meet the wizard's familiar, an energetic sea otter named Scratch.
Laurish Samprey (Wizard): Hello Captain
Ratbone Carder: Oh Bless! Your home is charming!
Laurish Samprey (Wizard): Why thank you young bard, I try to have a hospitable home for those who need to rest their weary feet on a long journey
Vee Barlett: Yar. Like the house.
Temperance: A lighthouse for the weary seafarer. That's nice.
Ratbone Carder: Closely looking at one of the aquariums
Laurish Samprey (Wizard): What brings you all the way out to the Last House
Vee Barlett: Some quest or another, but kinda just wanna look around now.
Inv Zora Polasis: An important quest
Vee Barlett: ushers for Zora to explain while she looks
Laurish Samprey (Wizard): Be my guest, a Captain always needs to know the swell of the seas around them
Vee Barlett: grins
Vee Barlett: Likin' you already.
Vee Barlett: Any chance you speak to yer critters?
Laurish Samprey (Wizard): Certainly Scratch here is very friendly, we have had hours and hours of conversations about fish, styles, types, tastes, debates on the head or the tail first, de-bone or eat whole, a wide range of topics we cover here in our house.
Inv Zora Polasis: We've been tasked to help stop the attacks of the sahuagin and to locate the missing Lychelle from the chasm
Ratbone Carder: hi scratch!
Inv Zora Polasis: looks at the otter with caution
Vee Barlett: opens her mouth to speak to Scratch then pauses and decides to wait until after “business” discussions.
Laurish Samprey (Wizard): Poor poor Lychelle, such a darling girl, she always was an adventuresome type, one to go rushing off at a rumor of treasure
Inv Zora Polasis: Can't imagine that
Laurish Samprey (Wizard): Nod told me she perished in a collapse
Inv Zora Polasis: The potentate thought you might be able to help us in some way
Inv Zora Polasis: We aren't completely sure she has perished
Inv Zora Polasis: But we would like to know to tell her family
Laurish Samprey (Wizard): Of course I will help, if Kara sent you then I need to give you my assistance as you need. She would expect it of me.
Laurish Samprey (Wizard): IF you are going to go into the sea caves then you will need some equipment. I am certain a fine Captain such as you are Vee has many abilities to deal with things underwater
Inv Zora Polasis: Not as many she would like
Vee Barlett: laughs
Inv Zora Polasis: We could use any help you can offer
Vee Barlett: Lots of abilities 'cept the ability to breath water.
Laurish Samprey (Wizard): Well I can assist you with that, one of my specialties is a special version of my own. I have created Potions of Water breathing that can hold 4 doses in 1 vial. They are special crystal that keeps the magic working through both fresh and salt water
Laurish Samprey (Wizard): You all know how to swim of course, so you do not need any help with that
Temperance: raises her brows in intrigue.
Vee Barlett: I suppose that useful. You ain't cracked the code on that bein' more permanent, have ya? Like an enchanted ring or nothin'?
Vee Barlett: Er well, one crew had a hard time swimmin' so without callin' out who, might take help fer them.
Laurish Samprey (Wizard): I have not yet been able to create such powerful permanent magical items of usefulness that we all search for Captain
Glimber Silvernose: looks down at the floor
Vee Barlett: sighs
Vee Barlett: Well one can hope. I'll find it one day.
Laurish Samprey (Wizard): I have a ring that you can borrow that will give the person wearing it the ability to swim like they were born to it
Laurish Samprey (Wizard): I do have almost a full dozen of my potions that I have completed this year
Vee Barlett: Yar that be nice. If'n they don't wanna let ya know it them, I'll hold on to it and pass it to them later.
Vee Barlett: Them potions be good, too. Ain't all of us good at holdin' our breath long.
Vee Barlett: Ain't got somethin' to help see underwater do ya? We lost some of our lights.
Laurish Samprey (Wizard): I will need you to return them if you do not use them, along with the ring
Vee Barlett: nods
Vee Barlett: Captain's honor.
Laurish Samprey (Wizard): and bring me any information you find about the sea devils
Vee Barlett: See? Ya know how to motivate me more. Gotta talk seablood to seablood here!
Laurish Samprey (Wizard): And I would say you should be offering me a portion of any treasure you discover
Laurish Samprey (Wizard): You will have to go find out what is there first though
Vee Barlett: Yar and how much we do or don't have to return to ya of what ya let us borrow.
Vee Barlett: But if I find that ring, I call dibs.
Vee Barlett: grins
Laurish Samprey (Wizard): Laughs heartily
Vee Barlett : [Translation] So you talk, Scratch?
Scatch - Otter, Sea : [Translation] What are you saying?
Temperance: It is asking what you are saying.
Temperance: Sorry. He? She?
Vee Barlett: Like them other otters. Ain't speak the proper language.
Vee Barlett: sighs
Vee Barlett : [Translation] Y'all in the tanks speak at all? Anythin' of interest of them sanguarians?
Scatch - Otter, Sea : [Translation] What does she want?
Temperance : [Translation] I... am not quite sure. She speaks the language of the Sea Creatures, so even I am not able to understand.
Scatch - Otter, Sea : [Translation] That seems interesting, but fish are food not friends
Temperance: Scratch is asking what you want, Vee.
Temperance: laughs lightly.
Temperance : [Translation] Indeed. That seems to be the general motto around these parts.
<font color="#000000">GM : [Translation] None of the fish in the aquariums know about the sahuagin, (sea devils)
Vee Barlett: Well not as an informative bunch as I'd hope but that be fine. They probably kept to themselves.
Spending about a half hour so far relaxing and talking with Laurish,
Vee Barlett: quietly slips Glimber the ring when there is a chance
Laurish sends Nod upstairs to fetch the potions for you
Glimber Silvernose: Thank you Vee
Glimber Silvernose: I'll take good care of it while I have it
Vee Barlett: Yar please do or it be my head on the line.
Vee Barlett: grins and winks
Vee Barlett: So how we gonna get into the uninspirin' chasm?
Vee Barlett: 'Cause I didn't sign up fer no diggin'
Laurish Samprey (Wizard): Did you explore the hidden cave in the waterfall?
Vee Barlett: Ain't explored nothin' yet. I don't willingly explore caves.
Inv Zora Polasis: What's in the hidden cave?
Laurish Samprey (Wizard): I suspect it leads to the caverns that collapsed
Inv Zora Polasis: Ohh that's helpful
Vee Barlett: If it really do....
Laurish Samprey (Wizard): They get flooded often
Inv Zora Polasis: So our choices are to dig or explore potentially flooded caves
Vee Barlett: At least that be water.
Laurish Samprey (Wizard): The only entrance that I know of is underwater
Laurish Samprey (Wizard): So yes my good Captain, lots of water
Laurish Samprey (Wizard): Both above and below
Inv Zora Polasis: But eventually you get to caves with air, right?
Laurish Samprey (Wizard): I speculate that you do
Inv Zora Polasis: Hmmm
Laurish Samprey (Wizard): I have never gone through them, only into the beginning of the caves
Vee Barlett: Floodin' linked to the tides?
Laurish Samprey (Wizard): But if there was an opening from the seaquake, that would suggest there were already caverns below the chasm
Laurish Samprey (Wizard): That was when I was a much younger man, I cannot tell you what happens now
Laurish Samprey (Wizard): You will need some sort of boat or ship to make your way to where the Crystal Falls meets the Sea
Vee Barlett: Yar easy enough.
Glimber Silvernose: maybe Marly can lend us a boat to take to the falls so we don't have to leave the ship there unattended
Vee Barlett: I got me canoe if we all fit....
Glimber Silvernose: You have one of those great big canoes?
Vee Barlett: I gots me own canoe in the boat.
Vee Barlett: It fits, uh....
Vee Barlett: counts
Vee Barlett: Well... less than we gots so maybe we borrow one.
Vee Barlett: Why not. They want us doin' their work they can help us do it
The group leaves the wizard and heads back
stopping at the Chasm
The chasm opened up at the feet of the Near Downs in the violent shaking caused by the recent seaquake.
Rothuss Carder: Yep. That's a big hole.
Rothuss Carder: Nifty.
Vee Barlett: Look at all that... dirt.
Vee Barlett: [CHECK] Wisdom (vs. Target 14) [FAILURE by 1] [d20 = 15]
Vee Barlett: Yep. That be dirt.
Temperance: [CHECK] Wisdom (vs. Target 16) [SUCCESS by 15] [d20 = 1]
Rothuss Carder: What'd they say this leader person was looking for again?
Vee Barlett: Some remains or somethin' of the expedition here before or some way to get inside. Or both.
Vee Barlett: Without diggin'
Inv Zora Polasis: The sea captain said she was a treasure hunter
Rothuss Carder: Tomb robber, same difference sometimes.
Temperance: It'd be difficult to figure out how to get down there safely. Highly possible that the excavation will collapse without proper engineering or mining skills. With proper precaution.
Inv Zora Polasis: But he also said the waterfall might give us another entrance
Vee Barlett: At least we on sea to get there, too.
Rothuss Carder: And none of our casters have a flying spell?
Rothuss Carder: [CHECK] Intelligence (vs. Target 13) [FAILURE by 3] [d20 = 16]
Vee Barlett: If I toss ya, that might count as flyin'
Inv Zora Polasis: [TOWER] [SKILL] Find/Remove Traps [PERCENT:Find/Remove Traps] (vs. Target 45) [FAILURE by 55] [d100 = 100]
Inv Zora Polasis: looks for traps, but fails miserably
and Zora does not have any inspiration
Glimber Silvernose: [CHECK] Intelligence (vs. Target 7) [SUCCESS by 5] [d20 = 2]
Glimber looks around, and off to the west, and now knowing about the waterfall and the lake, can tell that there must be at least two levels of caves that would connect all that way.
Glimber Silvernose: stares at the chasm again
Glimber Silvernose: If these caverns go around the island the there has to be two levels of caves
Glimber Silvernose: Some would have air which would be good
Glimber Silvernose: But some will be full of water
Vee Barlett: Why can't it be just one cave? Just a simple cave with one damn room? Why caves? Who cursed me??
Rothuss Carder: Alright. Well, if someone observant wants to rope up and take a chance, I can give you a ride to the hole to peek in. Don't know what you'll see.
Temperance: shrugs and raises hand.
Temperance: Sure, why not.
Rothuss Carder: Vee, you curse enough already.
Vee Barlett: curses at him.
Vee Barlett: [SKILL] Sea Legs [MOD:DEX] (vs. Target 15) [SUCCESS by 10] [d20 = 5]
Vee Barlett: stomps the ground
Solid ground
Vee Barlett: Yar just too solid. Ain't happy about that.
Glimber Silvernose: [SKILL] Gnome: Detect the existence of slopes or grades [PERCENT:Gnome: Detect the existence of slopes or grades] (vs. Target 80) [FAILURE by 8] [d100 = 88]
Glimber Silvernose: [SKILL] Gnome: Detect the existence of unsafe wall, ceiling, floor [PERCENT:Gnome: Detect the existence of unsafe wall, ceiling, floor] (vs. Target 70) [FAILURE by 24] [d100 = 94]
Vee Barlett: Hard to stay upright when it don't be movin'
Glimber Silvernose: [SKILL] Gnome: Determine depth underground [PERCENT:Gnome: Determine depth underground] (vs. Target 60) [FAILURE by 14] [d100 = 74]
Rothuss Carder: Someone want to rope up Temperance here, so we can pull her out if it goes pear-shaped?
Vee Barlett: [SKILL] Rope Use [MOD:DEX] (vs. Target 15) [SUCCESS by 9] [d20 = 6]
Vee Barlett: [SKILL] Observation [MOD:INT] (vs. Target 12) [SUCCESS by 7] [d20 = 5]
Rothuss Carder: I can lower her on the floating disc, but if it goes over the hole it might fall in.
Temperance: Might as well give it a try.
Glimber Silvernose: Be careful!
Rothuss Carder: Oh, I see, it's not open. Shadow made it look open.
Vee Barlett: But I got the rope all tight an' nice around her.
Rothuss Carder: The disc can carry 600 lbs., I think. Glimber, how dense are you? Think you and Tempe can fit in that?
Glimber Silvernose: Probably?
Rothuss Carder: You can sit there and observe it without having to touch the ground and risk a cave-in.
Vee Barlett: See if it be worth you lot diggin'
Glimber Silvernose: I can take a shovel
Rothuss Carder: The disc sits 3 feet off the ground. So you're fine, unless the ground disappears from under you.
Temperance: It should be alright.
Glimber Silvernose: grabs a shovel from the excavation supplies lying around
Rothuss Carder: [CAST] Tenser's Floating Disc
Ratbone Carder: picks up shovel
Temperance: takes one just in case.
So the disc floats out over the collapsed hole
Vee Barlett: watches
sinks down
Rothuss Carder: Hold on, before you go, just in case.
Rothuss Carder: casts Vocalize on Temperance
Temperance: blinks back in response.
Rothuss Carder: You can cast without speaking now. Just in case
Temperance: Ah, that is very useful! Thank you.
Temperance: smiles lightly.
Rothuss Carder: Alright, climb on you two, and I'll guide the disc from here.
Temperance: climbs on the disc carefully.
Rothuss Carder: it doesn't last long.
Glimber Silvernose: gets on the disc
Rothuss Carder: The disc is for over an hour, vocalize is shorter
Temperance: I understand.
The disc stays horizontal as it floats out and down, the two of them sitting looking over the edge
Glimber Silvernose: This is fun!
Temperance: [SKILL] Observation [MOD:INT] (vs. Target 13) [SUCCESS by 9] [d20 = 4]
Temp has a rope on her leading back to Vee
Glimber Silvernose: Better than swimming
Temperance: holds onto Glimber just in case she has to grab him.
As the disc sinks down towards the bottom of the pit
Temperance: takes out her continual light device.
the disc drops down a total of 12 feet below the surface
Temperance: looks around her.
Rothuss Carder: lays on the edge of the chasm with his head and arms over the edge so he can get the best view of the disc and its occupants.
Glimber Silvernose: [SKILL] Gnome: Detect the existence of unsafe wall, ceiling, floor [PERCENT:Gnome: Detect the existence of unsafe wall, ceiling, floor] (vs. Target 70) [SUCCESS by 34] [d100 = 36]
Glimber Silvernose: [SKILL] Gnome: Determine depth underground [PERCENT:Gnome: Determine depth underground] (vs. Target 60) [SUCCESS by 57] [d100 = 3]
Glimber Silvernose: This would take an awful lot of work to dig here
Glimber Silvernose: We should go back up and tell them
Temperance: nods lightly.
Temperance: That would be very important for them to know.
Glimber Silvernose: Vee it's gonna take about 6 hours of all of us digging to break through
Glimber Silvernose: And the shaft might collapse
Rothuss Carder: You ready to come back up?
Vee Barlett: Yar so ain't doin' that nonsense.
Glimber Silvernose: Yes please!
Temperance: pulls on the rope to signal that they want to come back up.
Rothuss Carder: What's the password?
Glimber Silvernose: Ummm
Vee Barlett: I'll knock yer teeth out.
Glimber Silvernose: Treasure?
Temperance: Just in case?
Rothuss Carder: sighs.
Rothuss Carder: You all are terrible at this game.
Rothuss Carder: Alright, come on back.
Temperance: laughs lightly.
Rothuss Carder: gestures the disc back up to the edge.
Ratbone Carder: laughs
Temperance: I'm sorry if we were too focused on trying to make sure we got what we needed.
Glimber Silvernose: Once we dug through there would probably be a 20-50 foot drop after that
Vee Barlett: So we find a boat and get to the waterfall.
Glimber Silvernose: scratches his head
Glimber Silvernose: Would be faster
Rothuss Carder: helps the two down off his disc and then hops up and sits cross-legged in it while everyone discusses.
Vee Barlett: takes back her rope
Glimber Silvernose: We need to shore this all up if we want to do it this way
Vee Barlett: We ain't 'cause dirt stupid so we go by water.
Rothuss Carder: Do you know how to do this shoring?
Glimber Silvernose: Yes but it takes time to make sure you do it right and not have accidents
Glimber Silvernose: cave ins are bad
Ratbone Carder: if we go the other way, we probably are using caverns that are intact. it just seems more likely to get caved in upon if we go the digging way
Rothuss Carder: So we have the knowledge, and probably tools, but not really the training.
The time is 10:18 AM
Temperance: So... by water then?
Rothuss Carder: shrugs.
Glimber Silvernose: Think so
Vee Barlett: Ain't sure how many times I gotta repeat that.
Temperance: Alright, then, by water it is.
Temperance: It's best to take the best chance at being safe.
Rothuss Carder: It'd help if that wasn't your answer to everything, Vee. “Where shall we go for lunch?” “TO SEA!”
Vee Barlett: Fish is delicious.
Inv Zora Polasis: laughs
Ratbone Carder: laughs
Temperance: Alright, well, can we go there by the ship we have? Or are we going to need something smaller?
Temperance: Like a canoe? Or... a boat or...
Inv Zora Polasis: Where to next?
Vee Barlett: Let's find us a boat.
Ratbone Carder: we were talking about needing a canoe when this first came up
Rothuss Carder: Raft? Arm floaties?
Temperance: laughs lightly.
Temperance: Arm floaties?
Rothuss Carder: Honestly no idea how this disc'd work over water. Definitely need to try that out before it's an emergency.
Temperance: That would be best, yes.
So you go back to town
Also by the way this is the third biggest town you have seen after Seagate and Osterhold
You go back by the docks to ask around
MeLange: Whoa! This place is bronze level big!
Olmes (Fighter): Hello Captain Barlet
Vee Barlett: Ahoy. We need a boat.
Rothuss Carder: on the way back, Rothuss tests to see if he can guide the disc where he wants *while* he's sitting in it, instead of it following him around.
Olmes (Fighter): Aye, where are you going?
Vee Barlett: Behind them waterfalls by the Crystal Lake.
Olmes (Fighter): Huh, there is something behind there?
Olmes (Fighter): You sure?
Vee Barlett: shrugs
Vee Barlett: Old Sea Wizard thinkin' so and he seems to know his stuff.
Olmes (Fighter): I would talk to Uther, he is a pearl diver
Rothuss Carder: dismissed the disc before we came back to town.
Olmes (Fighter): He would know, and his boat is stuck at the docks
Rothuss Carder: Why's it stuck?
Olmes (Fighter): He is in a bad mood though
Olmes (Fighter): Too dangerous to go out pearling
Vee Barlett: pinches between her brows again
Olmes (Fighter): No pearling no money
Vee Barlett: If I'm goin' on a quest then why ain't they makin' it easier? (grumbling to herself)
Vee Barlett: Well yer Potentate wants us goin' that way so she can pay him for us to use his boat.
Vee Barlett: [CHECK] Charisma (vs. Target 10) [FAILURE by 7] [d20 = 17]
Olmes (Fighter): Aye you should speak with him
Vee Barlett: too annoyed to be convincing
Vee Barlett: Fine.
Olmes (Fighter): Points you down to the far dock away from the Lady
Uther Stillblade: Coiling rope, then YANKS it out, then coils it again
Rothuss Carder: Thanks, kindly sir.
Uther Stillblade: Coiling, YANK, coiling
Temperance: This attempt at a voyage certainly has its hurdles... (mumbles quietly)
Uther Stillblade: Looks up as you approach
Vee Barlett: Ahoy. Wes told you got a boat fer us to borrow.
Rothuss Carder: whistles a nautical tune as they walk.
Uther Stillblade: Borrow my boat? Just who are you?
Vee Barlett: Hired by the Potentate to solve yer island problems.
Uther Stillblade: Oh really?
Uther Stillblade: You are after those sea devils?
Vee Barlett: Killed a few already.
Uther Stillblade: They are stealing our pearls, trying to cave in our hulls
Uther Stillblade: Good on you
Uther Stillblade: Who are you?
Vee Barlett: Captain Barlett.
Uther Stillblade: OH, huh,
Uther Stillblade: The Pier warden spoke about you this morning when setting up watches
Uther Stillblade: said to pay attention to your ship
Vee Barlett: Yar seemed my name gettin' around.
Inv Zora Polasis: mumbles “the dreaded captain Barlett”
Uther Stillblade: Why you need to borrow my boat, the Lady looks to be a fine ship
Vee Barlett: 'Cause I need someone watchin' the Lady and we ain't goin' far, just to them falls around the corner.
Uther Stillblade: You staying? or just looking?
Vee Barlett: Gonna explore the caves back there 'cause it might hold clue to yer sea devil problem.
Uther Stillblade: Grunts
Uther Stillblade: Tell ya what, we can take my boat, the Guilded Knife, I can take you to the Crystal Falls, and I can wait there for an hour for you, for a dozen pearls
Inv Zora Polasis: I'm sorry I don't think you understand
Inv Zora Polasis: We're going to be in the caves for I don't know. A couple days maybe?
Inv Zora Polasis: [CHECK] Charisma (vs. Target 12) [FAILURE by 5] [d20 = 17]
Inv Zora Polasis: [SKILL] Intimidation [MOD:CHA] (vs. Target 12) [FAILURE by 4] [d20 = 16]
Uther Stillblade: Every time we go out pearling off of Rateliff a quarter of our boats get attacked.
Uther Stillblade: I am willing to take you out there to your caves, but I am not sticking around for days
Inv Zora Polasis: You don't have to
Rothuss Carder: Are the caves behind the falls at sea level a boat like the Knife could go into?
Uther Stillblade: I ain't certain there are caves there
Uther Stillblade: I ain't never heard of it
Rothuss Carder: Do you pearl dive near the falls?
Uther Stillblade: nah the falls churn up the waters there, too much fresh water, not good for the oysters
Inv Zora Polasis: how many days do we want to allot for this?
Inv Zora Polasis: Maybe he can leave us and come back for us
Uther Stillblade: I can do that
Rothuss Carder: Hey Vee, any idea if these sea devils are salt water or fresh water critters?
Uther Stillblade: If you are doing this for the Potentate then she has the pearls to make it worth my while
Inv Zora Polasis: And we shall tell Marly of our agreement so if you do not return as scheduled she and her mother will know of it
Vee Barlett: They attacked us in the sea but they didn't start attackin' until that chasm opened. Be why we go there.
Rothuss Carder: Ah. I was thinking that if they were salt water, they wouldn't like the water next to the Falls either.
Uther Stillblade: I plan on returning
Inv Zora Polasis: Good
Vee Barlett: Glimbs, how long you think them caves be takin'? A day at most?
Uther Stillblade: I can get you there, and then I will come back the next day to see if you are still alive
Glimber Silvernose: But there are two levels of caves that go all around the island
Glimber Silvernose: It could take a while
Temperance: Last time we engaged with caves, it took a couple days.
Vee Barlett: Any dolphins go near there?
Rothuss Carder: Uther, how about every day at, say, noon, until we meet back up with you or 2 weeks passes?
Uther Stillblade: There be lots of dolphins all around the seas here
Inv Zora Polasis: I'm not sure what dolphins have to do with anything
Inv Zora Polasis: Will you come as Rothuss has asked?
Uther Stillblade: I can do that
Vee Barlett: Well at worst maybe they give us a ride if'n ya don't show up (to herself)
Uther Stillblade: Every day at Noon until you return, or the Potentate decides to give up
Ratbone Carder: strums an adventure tune
Inv Zora Polasis: Thank you
Temperance: jots it down on parchment.
Temperance: Every day at noon...
Uther Stillblade: If you solve this sea devil problem will be worth twice or three times the cost
Inv Zora Polasis: Yes. This could help you greatly
Uther Stillblade: We can be there in a couple of hours, when do you want to leave?
Rothuss Carder: Vee the Famous Sea Devil Solver, is what you'll be called.
Inv Zora Polasis: looks at Vee
Vee Barlett: Within' an hour.
Inv Zora Polasis: When should we leave? We need to pack rations from the ship
Uther Stillblade: We can leave at Noon then
Glimber Silvernose: We need to bring food
Temperance: Rations for the journey would help
