Birthday Game 2017 - Session Summary

- Welcome all to today's Birthday Game (Extravaganza)! Also to what is the beginning of what I forsee to be a long summary. I could be wrong, but as I'll be writing this as we play, I don't know exactly what will happen or how many typos I make. And so, stuffed with french toast (well some of us) and all logged in we start where we left of last night! Which you can find a summary of right here at this very long link that you're going to click, right? Good. Ready? Set. Go!
- As a side note, we also did some level-ups and checks to make sure everything is good.
- Half the group decides to explore the village out of interest and also in search of not fish to eat (also cooking supplies and berries and whatever else). And so we meet Grillie and quickly find out why there are no H's in her name. Yes, she is difficult to understand (so unfortunate that I had to step away and missed that conversation? Yes, very unfortunate).
- Hams for Indigo! That's good. Now what about some berries at the shore? The party splits (dun dun dun) with Branwyn and Kel going to the tavern for a drink, and Shi, Miranda, Marisu, and Hugh visiting the shore.
- No berries, but you know what wonders they do find? A giant insect swarm. Of course. The swarm attacks Hugh while Kel and Branwyn, far from them, are warned of insects on the shore causing Kel to rush off and leave Branwyn. What will they do? What you do with any swarm of insect: swat them away. With wind. Well that was eventful as everyone runs back to the town.
- It is early afternoon as we sail onward only to see a "giant" gar (it is up to you if you think 8 ft is giant) surface near us. We watch it, it doesn't attack, and we reach Corvash by that evening. Woohoo! Nothing to note from the dockmaster except he mentions ice forming early up the river. This may or may not be important later. Oh and orcs more visible farther north? Damn orcs. Anything else, dockmaster? Nope. Okay, thanks!
- Hugh and Neith remain with the boat and the hired guard while the rest go to the inn, including the wolves. Does their training pay off? Look at those lovely chickens over there. They look soooo delicious. Maybe just one bite...no, no. Remember your training! That's right. Good wolves! You passed your first test, and this makes me happy. So on to the next day!
- We continue sailing past Corvash, a day and night without encounters, which means encounters the next afternoon with scrags! Speak of the devils. Multiple devils, that is. All hands on deck! Time to scrub these scabs of a scrag!
- Don't forget these things regenerate unless you burn them to death. Thankfully, Wu knows this and does this and...accidentally burns Hoffman, too. Well at least one of those scrags won't be able to return! The others scurry off after the fight. Will any return? Not as of the night.
- We decide to pass Berem as there is no urgent need to stop in town and camp on shores for the evening. The wolves need to hunt, but they can't hunt in town. That's frowned upon. So they hunt in the woods, come upon a mostly destroyed village, and BOB apparently pulls out his book on the Underdark. Lovely. What's coming next?
- And so this mysterious village? Smashed, not burned. What can smash a village? Giants and ogres, of course! The next question is what do we do? Actually, that's always the question, but as for the answer? Well...um, they run, actually. Shi doesn't want the wolves to get hurt, and two of each creature and this small party? The knarr will either bring safety or help.
- They run with Hugh and an array of wolves in the lead, but Shi, Kel, and Shur are lagging behind just, oh, a thousand feet or so? Sorry. A thousand and five hundred feet. Not that far behind, right? Just a short distance away is all!
- As they keep running, Shur lets off some arrows and, even at an extreme distance, manages some very nice hits. Hoffman catches up with them and helps Shur to slow the giants down as Kel and Shi continue to run and everyone else packs up the boat.
- While the elves reach the boat and help to pack, Branadarus decides to run and help confront the giants while Miranda flies to confront the giants. During the confrontation, Hoffman is grabbed by one giant. He manages to hit him while held as he has his axe, but still gets thrown a decent distance and hurt a decent amount. Don't worry. Between Branadarus and Hoffman, the giant does die.
- Shur shots and runs until forced to fight the giant in hand-to-knee combat and, as expected, does get hurt in the encounter. Branadarus and Hoffman attempt to hold back the two ogres that finally caught up to the group. So much excitement here! That's what it is, right? Excitement? Or the impeding feeling of doom?
- Of course we killed them all. What did you expect? I mean, yes, some of us were hurt pretty dang bad, but the baddies are dead, so it's good, right? Actually, three are dead and one is a mouse with some extreme HP now. Good luck to any future animal hunting it!
- And on the dead creatures we find 16 gold and a magic human ring. Success!
- Did we mention this wasn't even a normal encounter? This was the wolves went hunting and found giants. We haven't done night watches and potential encounters. Guess who is out of healing spells? And our other priests? Currently busy. Fingers crossed for good rolls! And so, the boat is out sailing from where the giants were and watches are being set...
- Good news! No encounters for the night, everyone finishes being healed in the morning, and now what will this day bring us? Time to find out.
- Sailing along, Hoffman finally finds out who Sam is. Oops. Oh and Branadarus is a prince? Okay, well let's get proper introductions now so Hoffman knows who to protect!
- Prince Branadarus, Prince Ilero, maybe future king Sam, Wu Sen Cho the married merchant from a caravan Indigo was guarding and decided to join the group and hopes to return with riches and build his own small village, and oh, Teb hates the man Sam is descendant from so now I think Hoffman is caught up in all the dynamics that currently matter?
- Remember the plan to experiment with letting Teb fly? Yes, that is finally happening. So lashed to Ilero's Hand of Reaching, Teb goes up and...nope, it doesn't work. Without someone holding Teb, he cannot see anyone. Is it anyone, Kel specific, or anything living...? Nope. It seems it must be elf (or human?) or possible with a tree long term? And, if curious, we found this out by letting a wolf sit on Teb. Such a good boy, Galad!
- We keep up a lovely discussion when suddenly acid rains from the sky? Hide Kenna! Young black dragon is attacking! And it does (who is surprised?) hit almost everyone except Indigo and a couple others while of those hit only Shi and Branwyn make their saves. Ouch. Yeah, that stings a little.
- It flies off and circles the boat so Shi casts Zone of Sweet Air, Branwyn reminds of her of the Wand of Wonder, and now the question is, will it finally get used? The dragon gets closer, Marisu yells some bard's inspiration up to the group, and seriously, a dragon? Young or not, a dragon? Well we ARE the Dragonslayers and this IS the Birthday Game, so...
- No, it sadly doesn't get close enough, but it does end up dead (and no, Zone of Sweet Air did NOT help) and no one else ends up dead so that's good, yes? Yes, I think so. In the end, it showered us with acid rain three times, but the third time Penelope had the brilliant idea to shield everyone with the sail. We don't need it anyways! Dragon dies from arrows, but probably mostly from the flying Hoffman (fly cast by Miranda) hacking the dragon apart. Still, we're all severely wounded, but it is what it is. At least Shur and Hoffman manage to get a nice trophy and hide from it!
- Marisu is bummed that she never did find out if she successfully glitter-bombed the dragon as is Shi. **Lisa - My guess is it didn't go off. Range is 10ft/lvl (I believe) so dragon would have had to be within 60 ft of where Marisu was standing. But now that I think about it, I don't think the spell was cast because Marisu had to move to cast it. She was down in the hold and had to get out of the hold in order to target and cast. Mages can't cast and move or move and cast in the same round - unless there is some Bard exception to this mage rule.
- Sail burned, but patchable, they near the port of the strange town of Therip where they will have to disembark and walk, but who will stay with the ship? Indigo volunteers himself and Penelope while Hoffman argues that Indigo should go. Guess they'll figure it out in the morning. And by morning I mean when next session happens because you know what? It's been a long day. Definitely a good day, but here is a good place to stop, yes?
- And so we wrapped up this year's Birthday Game which was certainly an adventure. High expectations for next year? Maybe. But at least there will be some expectations for themed breakfast, or at least 3D printed pancakes. See you next time!
[and here we come to the end of the birthday game summary which may or may not have typos edited out later; good night!]
