Diplomatic Entanglements

Ellenara approaches Branwyn at her lessons. "Mistress Ambassador, I know that you are a member of the local guild. I was wondering what your opinions were regarding myself joining. I do not know what they would expect from me, but I did not exactly come to join a guild in a city like this. I don't want to tie myself too tightly to them. But if you think it would be for the best, perhaps you can take me there to register with them."

Joseph speaks up as Branwyn continues to read. "If you want to be able to use magic in the city you need the guilds permission. Well I suppose I mean if you want to cast magic. eerrr, I mean to not be a priest in the city and cast spells. I suppose. I could not be caught using magic inside of the city until Branwyn made me part of the guild."

"Ah, so it is as simple as the Mistress Ambassador making me a part of the guild? That's good. Then I don't have to worry too much. It will probably be easier for me to help her in the political meetings if I am a part of this guild. I just didn't want to owe anyone any favors or money or anything else, really. This city isn't going to be my permanent home, so I don't want to get too tied up here."

Branwyn, Joseph and Ellenara made their way over to the Mage's Guild on the morning of the ball in honor of the King of Golinar.

"This shouldn't take long. Just a bit of magic, some introductions, sign a few documents and we shall be done. I know you were hesitant to join the Guild, Ellenara. I understand that. I'm not much of a joiner myself. But I do think that you shall enjoy it in the end," Branwyn said cheerily.

"Not only will you have the obvious permission to perform magic in the city, but you will have access to the Guild's library and resources. And, not to mention actually being able to make acquaintances with other mages. It is so nice at times to speak with those that take magic for granted and don't get worked up about every little thing. When I told Midguard about the demon mark, he was as interested in it as he would be about any other bit of news. He didn't go flying into a panic or wish to put me in a cage. He hasn't studied demons and so he's not going be much help himself, but it was nice to speak of it for what it is ... just another difficulty to be dealt with. Oh, here we are. Ready for your introduction?" Branwyn asked, looking at Ellenara as the large black door to the Mage's Guild appeared before them.

10/28/15

"Yes, Mistress. I cannot perform much magic, but I am ready with some cantrips, and a chromatic orb. If you say this is a good idea, then I'll go ahead with it. I have submitted myself to you as your apprentice, after all. I also hope that joining an official guild of the city will lend me some legitimacy when I attend meetings on your behalf. I just hope the mages here are more like you and less like that lord we had to entertain yesterday. He was quite unpleasant. I'm sorry for Marisu to have to deal with him, but glad he didn't choose myself."

Ellenara looks up at the door and grins. "At least mages all over the races seem to be the same in their love of drama and grandiose decorations like this."

Branwyn nodded. “I do feel bad for Marisu. You going to the ball with Leatherus puts far less constraints upon you. You may leave Leatherus at the drinks table and go chat with whomever you wish without him minding. As far as Lord Haskin is concerned, I can understand the arrogance to a certain degree. If he really is the son of the Earl of Mylwood and heir to his father’s lands, I can see a sense of entitlement. Not that his rudeness was excusable, but if for one evening we must tolerate such behavior, I do not mind. You never know when one day we may be in great need, and therefore having as many friendly relations as possible widens the doors of opportunity for assistance if ever such calamities arise.”

Branwyn paused for a moment and then continued. “I do think we need to watch Lord Haskin a bit though. His behavior at dinner was quite different than earlier in the day. He either has an extremely poor digestive system or was unsettled at answering questions about his home. His discomfort seemed to rise at every question we asked, which, as son of the Earl of his estate, he should have been able to answer simply and calmly. Phillipe had not seen this person since he was a child and so his true identity is based solely upon his word. It would not be the first time we have been duped by a stranger in this city. But I think the King of Golinar and his daughters should be able to sort this all out this evening. If Lord Haskin can keep from sweating and coughing all over them that is. But, we should probably get going or Midguard will be wondering what we are doing out here all this time,” she said and rapped on the door.

The door opened and Branwyn smiled brightly. “Good morning, Midguard! I have another apprentice to sign up for membership today. Please meet Miss Ellenara Psyndarryn, a young mage who wishes to join the Guild. Ellenara, this is Midguard the Magnificent.”
