Fool Me Twice - Out of Character Discussions
Here is a preliminary summary of what we know so far. Feel free to edit.
Victim profile: Mistress Waverlyn, former Drillian Ambassador to Terraguard
- Extravagant spender
- Intelligent and highly skilled in diplomacy and creating political schemes
- No priest, magic or weapons skills known
- Plotting to stage a Kayugan crusade against the Greeks
- On good terms with the Prince and the Church
- About 60 years old, gray hair, plump figure
Chronology of Events
- A mage (apprentice to a necromancer) was previously hired to cast Guardian spell keeping intruders from teleporting into the house
- Did spell cover Dimension Door?
- Unknown if spell was in effect at time of murder
- Only one entrance to house
- Guard stationed at front door – none inside house
- Atribella stated she and Joseph were bringing drinks and letters to Ambassador
- If staff was bringing refreshments, how was she poisoned?
- Ambassador left the room to visit the chamber pot.
- Joseph entered the room and saw a girl he took to be an assassin. He stabbed her with a dagger and shoved the body under the bed. Then he left the room.
- Girl was dressed as a stable boy lifted her arm as she saw Joseph but he saw no weapon (spell caster?)
- Joseph says he did not know her.
- Joseph stabbed the girl in the belly as he had learned to do on a ship
- About 10 minutes later, Joseph re-entered Ambassador’s room in the afternoon and cried out that she had been stabbed. Waverlyn was also stabbed in the belly.
- Atribella, who was in the hall, ran to get Phillipe who was down the hall in his office
- Joseph ran into Ambassador’s room at the same time as Atribella was getting Phillipe and then a sudden burst of flames set the Ambassador on fire. They think Waverlyn must have knocked over a candle as she fell over
- Phillipe and Joseph both grabbed her to pull her away from the flames and a dagger fell out of Waverlyn's robes
- As they were pulling her out of the room, there was another burst of flames with a WHOOSH and the entire house caught on fire
- The staff ran out of the house
- Priest performed divination and stated that the cause of death was poisoning and that Joseph did not poison or stab the Ambassador
Mysterious Information
- Ghost called Joseph by name. Joseph says he did not know girl. So we must ask the spirit her name next séance
Theories
- Murderer cast mind control spell on Joseph forcing him into killing the Ambassador. Potential planting of poisoned dagger prior to act. Suspects include Atribella who provided daggers to Joseph (TMO can fill in details). Fire was a cantrip gone wild
- Ambassador staged her own death and is hiding in parts unknown
Possible Suspects
Joseph Shortkin
- First one to discover the body
- Priests cannot confirm that he did not start fire; report he did not poison or stab Ambassador
- He can cantrip fire
Atribella
- Hired or convinced to help with a plot to kill the Ambassador. She had inside access to home
- Joseph lost his dagger a couple months before the murder. Atribella replaced it out of Waverlyn's dagger collection (She could do that??)
- She obtained another one after the fire from a merchant at the Naval Yard
Jennevive
- She is always a potential source of evil. She has the spell casting abilities. Murder happened 4 months before we arrived in city. Jennevive arrived at Jistelle about 1 month before we arrived in city and so could have been in Dryads Lair at time of murder. She orchestrated the plot against the Greeks at Skull Church. The murder caused our entire group to leave Drillian and be placed in positions of power in Dryads Lair, including a position for her. She has a history in this area - childhood friend of Prince Unthim, who she also seems to be plotting with. Exact plan unknown - but she is a possibility
Greeks
- They found out about the planned crusade and wanted to cut it off at the source. No evidence
Kayugans
- They find out they are being manipulated into a crusade and want to cut it off at the source. No evidence
Royals
- Too much political intrigue for their tastes? No evidence
Pirates
- Waverlyn used pirates to deliver messages in her schemes. Perhaps a deal went bad and they bypassed Joseph and got to her. No evidence
