TMO / Ancestry
Ancestry.com might be usable to trace important family histories within an RPG. You have the option of setting your tree to Private and not being findable in searches, so that your fake histories and people don't confuse everyone else trying to do real genealogy. ;) Or, you can purchase their standalone program (either by itself or through a subscription to the site) and keep everything local on your hard drive, without uploading it to the Ancestry.com server.
The key components to each person are pretty simple:
- First & Middle name
- Last name
- Birth date & place
- Note that places will try to look up by real Earth names, but you should be able to put in whatever you want.
- Death date & place
- Marriages, if any
- Marriages are one of the few facts that are 'shared' between multiple people. Making a change to the husband's marriage fact automatically updates the wife's fact at the same time.
- Immediate family.
- Parents & children. Siblings are usually built automatically by having the same parents.
- Note that adoption, step-children, and other things are all supported. A child can have several different kinds of parents, or even a different father than who his mother is married to. ;)
- You can add notes and media to people, and they can be attached to more than one person.
