Second watch – Indigo, Lanek and Daphene

Indigo: So Daphene, have you lived in Bywater your whole life?

Daphene: I have

From midday at a high of 63 the temperature has been dropping slowly all day long

Indigo: Must be hard to live in a port town when you want to be an adventurer

Indigo: Seeing ships all the time

Daphene: It was, but now I'm HERE! With the famous Indigo!

Indigo: laughs

Daphene: I've heard so many stories about you. Are they true? Did you really defeat a dragon with your bare hands wearing only shoes?

Indigo: WHAT?

Indigo: Why would I wear shoes and nothing else?

Daphene: It was unclear where the shoes are supposed to have been worn, but I assume the feet

Daphene: Well your prisoners had stolen them of course

Indigo: No I haven't fought a dragon naked

Indigo: laughs again

Lanek: dint I hear you killed a dragon from the inside out?

Lanek: like you let im swaller you?

Indigo: Ummm ... not a dragon

Indigo: That would be hard

Indigo: An ankheg

Lanek: oh. well there's legends to the contrary, so be ready fer that

Daphene: I also heard you scared off some vampires

Indigo: I'd rather not get eaten by anything

Lanek: current legends, I mean. I guess that's gossip

Indigo: I don't think I scared any vampires. They either scare me or they're friendly to us

Indigo: Stories sure get messed up

Daphene: You are FRIENDS with VAMPIRES?

Indigo: Well more Branwyn than me but yes sort of

Lanek: shrugs uncomfortably

Lanek: there's all sorts of people ...

Indigo: Not all vampires run around attacking people all the time

Daphene: visibly impressed

Daphene: Lanek, have you made friends with any... unconventional people?

Indigo: looks at Lanek

Lanek: um yeah

Lanek: you kinda hafta

Lanek: I mean in my line of work, once you steal somethin you gotta move it on, and the high and mighty don't get into that kinda work

Daphene: This is SO exciting!

Lanek: plenty of good people, but not GOOD people if you see what I’m sayin

Daphene: What kind of people are there where we're heading? Big people? Vampires?

Lanek: so you kinda go along, get along, don't make too many waves

Indigo: Mostly big people

Lanek: I don't think I been out this way before

Lanek: but then again, I’ve had my head knocked around a lot

Daphene: What kind of dangers should I be watching for?

Lanek: pickpockets an cutpurses

Indigo: Big birds or big fish

Indigo: Ohhh you mean when we land

Lanek: looks at indigo with surprise

Indigo: I thought she meant right now

Daphene: Both!

Indigo: Anything big is usually a problem

Lanek: okay so birds and fish now, miscreants later

Indigo: It's so dark we probably won't even see anything until it's right over us

Daphene notices that the waves on the river seem to be getting larger

Daphene: Is anyone else feeling a little queasy? Like... the waves are getting bigger?

Indigo: Waves?

Weather Report Location: Velikaya River Forest, Mid Spring Day 1, Midnight Precipitation: Heavy Rain Wind: Low Winds Temperature: Cold 37F / 3C

Indigo: We're not supposed to be having waves on the river

Daphene: Well, I definitely feel waves

Indigo: goes to the edge of the ship and looks out

The temperature has dropped by 30 degrees, the wind is picking up, and now rain/sleet is starting

Daphene: [SKILL] Weather Sense [MOD:WIS] (vs. Target 8) [SUCCESS by 0] [d20 = 8]

Indigo: This is a real storm!

Indigo: [SKILL] Boating [MOD:WIS] (vs. Target 10) [FAILURE by 3] [d20 = 13]

Lanek: grumbles

Lanek: [SKILL] Boating [MOD:WIS] (vs. Target 14) [SUCCESS by 13] [d20 = 1]

Indigo: Think the ship can make it through the storm?

Lanek: thinks

Daphene: I'm not sure this kind of storm should be happening on the river...

Daphene: This is very unusual. I would even potentially call it unnatural...

Indigo: You think it is a magic storm?

Lanek: yeah the ship otter make it, but maybe both of us should help hold the wheel

Lanek: we need at least one, but this is gettin rough

Indigo: Should we wake up Youtargim?

Indigo: I can wake him up so he can steer

Indigo: wakes up Youtargim

Indigo: Wake up! There's a storm brewing!

Youtargim: Hammhammm

Youtargim: Um

Youtargim: Yeah Yeah

Youtargim: Who turned off the heat

Youtargim: Wow

Indigo: Maybe it's a magic storm but I don't know how to shut it off

Youtargim: Oh

Indigo: Think Raelynn can stop a magic storm?

Youtargim: Yeah, I think that makes sense

Youtargim: Not sure she can,

Youtargim: I mean it makes sense that it is somehow magical

Indigo: Not sure if we should sit here and freeze or get back to rowing so we can get out of here. I think we might need to row again

Lanek: now that the kid is up

Indigo: What if it gets so cold the river freezes and we can't sail again?

Indigo: pulls anchor so we can leave

Lanek: rows

Daphene: rows

The people on watch ponder their situation.

Daphene: [CHECK] Wisdom (vs. Target 9) [FAILURE by 10] [d20 = 19]

Indigo: [CHECK] Wisdom (vs. Target 10) [SUCCESS by 2] [d20 = 8]

Lanek: [CHECK] Wisdom (vs. Target 13) [SUCCESS by 8] [d20 = 5]

Indigo: Wait a minute

Daphene: stops

Indigo: Silver dragons breath frost!

Daphene: That doesn't sound good

Indigo: What if a silver dragon was attacking us!

Indigo: looks around

Indigo: starts rowing

Indigo: Green dragons looking like silver dragons and silver dragons freezing ships

Youtargim: Indigo? Are you ok?

Youtargim: Why are you ... what?

Indigo: It's like we landed in the middle of a dragon war

Indigo: Why am I what?

Youtargim: I do not know about these metal dragon types

Youtargim: we have Yellow,

Youtargim: well I guess Brass is a metal

Youtargim: so Brass and Yellow

Youtargim: I am not familiar with Green

Youtargim: what do they do?

Youtargim: you started rowing harder Indigo

Indigo: I've only seen green, blue and black but I've heard of silver

Youtargim: [SKILL] Seamanship [MOD:DEX] (vs. Target 15) [SUCCESS by 14] [d20 = 1]

Indigo: I don't want to fight a dragon in the middle of the night

Indigo: The green dragons blast that gas that covered this fishing boat

Indigo: And they HATE elves!

Youtargim: I can tell you that any dragon I have ever heard of wants treasure and is vain about compliments

Youtargim: OH

Indigo: If a green dragon saw us they'd come straight at Raelynn and Licornah

Youtargim: quickly looks to make sure the hatch is closed

Youtargim: Well we can outrun them

Indigo: Hope so

Indigo: rows harder

Indigo: [SKILL] Boating [MOD:WIS] (vs. Target 10) [SUCCESS by 0] [d20 = 10]

Lanek: [SKILL] Boating [MOD:WIS] (vs. Target 14) [FAILURE by 2] [d20 = 16]

Daphene: [CHECK] Strength (vs. Target 17) [FAILURE by 1] [d20 = 18]

So the overall effect is that the temp has dropped 30 degrees, the wind has picked up, it is midnight, and Youtargim has extremely successfully navigated through the wind whipped waves and angling sails to double your speed to manage to escape the storm

with zero damage to the Buttercup

and an extra several miles overall accomplished for the trip than you expected to (which you will find out in the morning after the third watch)

The time is 3:00 AM

Indigo: Wow! That was a lot of work. I need sleep now

Lanek: collapses onto the bedroll

Third Watch – Howard, Bixi, Raelynn and Licornah

Bixi Fizzlebang: Good morning!

Lorie (Licornah): :: weaves and watches ::

Bixi Fizzlebang: stares out into the middle distance

Raelynn: Well that was a good sleep!

Raelynn: [SKILL] Herbalism [2] [MOD:INT] (vs. Target 11) [SUCCESS by 2] [d20 = 9]

Raelynn: Oh! Bixi Here! I made you some glitter lotion! It turned out decently.

Bixi Fizzlebang: What? Oh, thank you!

Bixi Fizzlebang: puts some lotion on

Raelynn: Would you like some, too, Howard? It'll bring out that sparkle in your eyes!

Bixi Fizzlebang: Oooooh, it smells so nice! What is that scent?

Raelynn: I wanted something a bit earthy so I tried some spruce and parsley. What do you think?

Bixi Fizzlebang: It... reminds me of home

Raelynn: Oh good! I think? Is that good?

Howard Plum: I don't think I would look good in glitter

Bixi Fizzlebang: Yes, it's good! It's been too long

Raelynn: You won't know until you try!

Bixi Fizzlebang: I don't want to go back there forever, but a visit is probably overdue

Raelynn: It has been a long trip, hasn't it? Maybe you can visit when we get back before you get your house settled.

Howard Plum: About your house Bixi. You're not going to put it inside the Inn section are you?

Bixi Fizzlebang: No, there's not enough room there. But I'm hoping Gerry will give me a little space for a garden. Some things just don't grow properly in the mist, you know?

Raelynn: What kind of plants? Just herbs? Or food and pretty ones or...?

Howard Plum: But every time you want to visit and then leave you'll get mist sick ...

Raelynn: Well if she feels Mist Sick, she can just.. go right back into the garden, right?

Raelynn: And then come out again and hope she handles it.

Bixi Fizzlebang: Both, though, to answer your question

Bixi Fizzlebang: There are so many useful things we don't have now, that we could.

Bixi Fizzlebang: And some of them also look pretty

Raelynn: I look forward to it! I have ideas if you need them. And have room.

Bixi Fizzlebang: I would love your contribution Rae! I've never left home so even though I know a lot, most of it is from books, and it's always different in person

Raelynn: It is very different! I'm actually not sure I'm ready to go home. I mean, I do want to see my mother, but, well, it's such a production.

Licornah: :: looks up :: If you need help with a garden, let me know, my family are farmers.... I seem to have a green thumb ...

Bixi Fizzlebang: Ooooh, that would be great, Licornah. If you don't mind braving the mist sickness

Licornah: Oh, I won't be going into that mist. If you move your garden, let me know I guess :: smiles weakly ::

Rowing, sailing

Licornah: :: pauses :: So, umm, who was the girl who got on the boat with us earlier? Daphene?

Raelynn: Someone who wants to be an adventurer.

Raelynn: shrugs

Licornah: :: nod :: Okay... seems reasonable then

Bixi Fizzlebang: I don't know, but she wants to be an adventurer, I can relate to that!

Bixi Fizzlebang: And she likes my stories!

Raelynn: Yes! You were going to tell us why she called you the Story Teller?

Bixi Fizzlebang: Well, that night after you burned the village down, I went over to the Jade Goblet and told them all about my adventures so far... well, our adventures since I've joined you, and now I'm famous for them!

Bixi Fizzlebang: But Rae... *I* want to know what's going on with you and Yout. He seemed unusually happy this morning...

Raelynn: Oh wow! Congratulations! Er, that's the right word, yes?

Licornah: :: nods sagely and continues weaving ::

Raelynn: Oh. We kissed last night.

Bixi Fizzlebang: OooOOOOooOOoOOooOOooOOOoOhhhhh

Howard Plum: looks up and then quickly away

Raelynn: Well it was New Years Eve, and I've never started off a New Year without one.

Bixi Fizzlebang: Is it... an experience you intend to repeat?

Raelynn: Well, maybe when I was really really young, but besides that.

Raelynn: shrugs

Raelynn: I like kisses.

Raelynn: I'm kind of annoyed the burning barn meant Lord Olgirith ....forgot.

Weather Report Location: Velikaya River Forest, Mid Spring Day 2, Dawn Precipitation: Light Rain Wind: No Wind Temperature: Cold 42F / 6C

The time is 6:00 AM

The dawn lights the eastern sky, still chilly but the storm and extreme cold and wind have died down

Indigo: Any more dragons?

Raelynn: Not that we noticed.

Craigh: That's good.

Indigo: Good!

Bixi Fizzlebang: [SKILL] Cooking [MOD:INT] (vs. Target 15) [SUCCESS by 11] [d20 = 4]

Bixi starts to cook a delicious breakfast.

Youtargim: [SKILL] Rope Use [MOD:DEX] (vs. Target 14) [FAILURE by 1] [d20 = 15]

Youtargim: Hey Lanek, can you check that boat please?

Youtargim: The ummm MOC?

Raelynn: Oh but I did give Bixi some new glittering lotion! I'm sure she'll share if anyone else is interested.

Lanek: [SKILL] Boating [MOD:WIS] (vs. Target 14) [SUCCESS by 8] [d20 = 6]

Youtargim: Do we really want to call it that?

Lorie (Licornah): :: wonders if the group is imaging dragons since she hasn't seen any /s ::

and Lanek can see that the ropes are a bit frayed but the boat is still there

Raelynn: What else could an upside down cow be?

Lanek: we still got it

Lanek: dunno how long these ropes'll hold out

Daphene: dead?

Raelynn: Tipped?

Daphene: Dead Sea Cow has a nice ring to it

Youtargim: That is an interesting name Daphene

Indigo: Talwin got a bunch of rope to tie things up. Why don't we use some of that to make sure it holds

Craigh: I can work on that while the rest are rowing.

Youtargim: It looks like it has a decent hold, not comfortable like the Buttercup, but it seems to hold a decent amount

Raelynn: Does it have to keep its old name? What are we going to do with it anyways?

Lanek: rows

Youtargim: I think giving it a new name would be good, we are claiming salvage rights on it

Craigh: [SKILL] Rope Use [MOD:DEX] (vs. Target 15) [FAILURE by 4] [d20 = 19]

Raelynn: Salvage rights?

Youtargim: When you are out on the seas

Raelynn: Well first, this is a river as you all keep telling me.

Youtargim: If you come across a wreck you can claim it

Youtargim: I am guessing that the same rules apply here

Raelynn: And are you allowed to salvage boats and ships? What's salvageable and what isn't?

Youtargim: It is salvageable if you can make it sail again

Youtargim: Or you sell it for scrap

Raelynn: Aren't ships supposed to go with their captains?

Indigo: It's the other way around

Youtargim: The ... uh... dead sea cow? is still boat worthy and we can use her or sell her

Indigo: And the captain went with the dragon instead

Youtargim: Good Captains stay with their ship until the end

Youtargim: and then hope for a rescue if needed

Raelynn: Who I'm guessing maybe died. So instead of sinking the ship you just.. take it?

Indigo: Yup

Raelynn: These rules confuse me.

Youtargim: I think Indigo knows more of these customs that most of us

Youtargim: In my seas we would take it, and crew it, and create a fleet

Youtargim: and then be able to raid more, attack bigger targets and take....

Raelynn: If it had a crew, but no captain, what would you do?

Indigo: Yeah but we don't need a fleet

Youtargim: well in general do more things

Indigo: You make a captain when there is none if you want to sail

Youtargim: If there was a working crew, we would give them a choice of joining us or being set safely at the next port

Raelynn: That seems less.... ruthless than I thought pirates normally were.

Youtargim: There is a code

Youtargim: Sort of a guideline

Daphene: So you just sail around looking for abandoned ships?

Daphene: That sounds boring

Raelynn: So if you don't want that to happen you... make someone captain like Indigo says?

Youtargim: Well sometimes you find abandoned ships, and sometimes you make abandoned ships

Raelynn: But you're on a ship for weeks and months and... forever?

Youtargim: The longest I have not been on a ship was when I was with you in the Elf Lands

Raelynn: That was only for a day or two.

Youtargim: Nods

Youtargim: I would say maybe a week or three a year at the most over the last decade plus

Youtargim: I have always lived on the sea and I have been a captain for a while

Indigo: You weren't on a ship all the time you worked for Princess Maya were you?

Youtargim: Most of that time

Youtargim: I sailed for her, returning with treasures and her requests

Raelynn: I don't know how you do it. That sounds very... not my thing.

Youtargim: Sailing the seas is different than this

Raelynn: But it's still on water.

Youtargim: You get to see new places, be out of sight of land for weeks

Youtargim: Or under the water,

Youtargim: or on a beach

Youtargim: the sunsets are spectacular

Raelynn: With humidity and wind burn and horribly skin! It's very hard to keep a good routine on the water.

Craigh: chuckles

Raelynn: And what about people and towns and parties?

Youtargim: There are very many parties

Youtargim: and towns with a ... people all over

Raelynn: Oh yes, I know that. You can pick out the sailors quite easily when they visit Loosend. And not necessarily in a good way.

Youtargim: A good captain knows how to be careful and pay attention to the right things

Youtargim: To learn as you might say

Raelynn: I suppose. I just can't quite comprehend that lifestyle. It just... doesn't quite sound as appealing as it clearly is to you.

Youtargim: I wonder if Bixi has finished breakfast, or did Indigo abscond with all of it

Lanek: rows

Youtargim: I like having the ability to go out and find what I need to please the Princess

Raelynn: Well whatever makes you happy. I won't begrudge people for what makes them happy. I might not understand it - at all - but if it makes someone happy...

Lanek: rows

Youtargim: I do hope I get to make you happy too

Daphene: Really? What if murder made someone happy?

Youtargim: Indigo, breakfast is up

Youtargim: What is murder for you Daphene

Raelynn: Well, legal and moral things, of course.

Lanek: cheers up at the thought of murder, but only for a second

Raelynn: If you hurt someone else to be happy, then no, I don't support that.

Youtargim: Like we talked about salvage, to others they might take that as stealing

Lanek: rows

Daphene: side-eyes Yout

Daphene: What kind of a question is that?

Youtargim: If We keep this boat, we know that all on board died, so we should feel free to keep it right?

Indigo: hurries over to Bixi to get a nice plate

Daphene: We didn't kill them

Youtargim: Very true, but if we come across the widow of the captain when we get to port, what then?

Lanek: it ain’t like we can go huntin down the heirs or somethin

Youtargim: Do we keep the boat? or give it to her?

Raelynn: And now you know why I was asking earlier!

Lanek: we have exackly ONE clue

Daphene: Ok, we can debate stealing all day, but you asked “What is murder to you?” That's quite a fucking question

Youtargim: So if you have to kill the bugbear that is trying to capture your boat

Youtargim: is that murder?

Indigo: What if the ship came from Bovine Valley

Raelynn: Oh! Maybe that's why it has a cow on it? Too bad that Penny girl isn't here.

Youtargim: What or Where is bovine valley Indigo?

Indigo: Oh that's back in Drillian. If it came from there it's really far from home. It's just the biggest cow place I ever heard of

Youtargim: ok

Indigo: And yes you stop anyone from taking your ship. Hopefully you don't have to kill them but you have to stop them

Daphene: Self-defense is obviously different than murder. Murder is defined by motive. At least it is in my culture. Not sure about yours.

Indigo: No one takes your ship

Youtargim: I agree with you Daphene

Youtargim: I have always lead my crew with the idea that we treat others as we want to be treated

Craigh: A lot of crime is all in how you phrase it or who is doing it.

Youtargim: However if we are supposed to be collecting a toll from everyone in an area

Youtargim: we need to enforce that toll sometimes when others do not want to pay

Daphene: Crime is a construct and thus open to debate.

Youtargim: That sounds very much like a pirate who wants to just steal rather than give people a chance to parley

Youtargim: You said you have not left home or gone very far Daphene?

Raelynn: Just because it is a law doesn't mean it is right.

Daphene: Certain things go deeper than socially agreed upon rules. Like murder.

Craigh: Do they?

Daphene: Yes.

Youtargim: I have found that some societies are very happy to embrace things like murder and call it survival of the fittest

Indigo: What's a construct other than buildings?

Daphene: If you are going to take someone's life when you don't have to, may the gods punish you appropriately

Youtargim: gnolls are a vicious lot

Indigo: conversation is going way over Indigo's head

Indigo: Gnolls are like gnomes?

Daphene: Something invented by people. People invented crime. Stealing someone else's money or forcing them to pay taxes or whatever... those are people things.

Craigh: So, let's say a thief breaks into a house to steal something small, like food, or a few coins. And the person who lives there comes home and discovers them in the act and attacks them with a knife, is it murder if they kill the burglar?

Youtargim: Gnolls are much bigger than gnomes, bigger than men, almost small giants, they are like a person and a hyena

Daphene: Depends. Did they need to kill the burglar?

Craigh: Doesn't sound like it to me.

Daphene: Then yes. That's murder.

Craigh: And if the burglar kills the owner in self-defense?

Raelynn: Um, didn't the burglar burgl...ar? first?

Craigh: Yes

Daphene: If the owner isn't trying to murder the burglar than the burglar has no reason to try and murder the owner

Raelynn: Well they shouldn't have done that probably.

Craigh: But the owner is trying to murder the burglar.

Daphene: Well then they shouldn't be.

Daphene: And if they are, then yes, go for it, burglar

Raelynn: But isn't the owner defending themselves?

Craigh: But is it murder if the burglar kills the owner in self-defense?

Daphene: Most burglars run away when they are caught, no?

Raelynn: Isn't that trespassing or something?

Craigh: The burglar in this scenario wasn't hostile, was just after some food or small coin.

Craigh: yes, absolutely.

Raelynn: Oh goodness. That's why I follow the Goddess of Love, not Justice.

Craigh: Oh, trust me, I don't follow any god of justice.

Craigh: grins

Raelynn: Maybe we need to find Brer and ask him.

Raelynn: Or Sundown. I bet he has a very specific view on this.

Daphene: Self-defense isn't murder. The cruel intention isn't there, it's just preservation

Daphene: Even if it's a burglar

Craigh: And yet the courts will most likely hang them for it.

Daphene: That's courts for you

Daphene: Courts follow laws. Laws are made by people. People are flawed

Daphene: shrugs

Raelynn: Boy are they.

Indigo: You sure think a lot

Craigh: I mean, when it comes down to it, the difference between a thief stealing some coins from a pocket and a noble collecting taxes is how rich the perpetrator is.

Indigo: hey! We collect taxes are we aren't thieves

Daphene: I think it also depends on what they do with the money they collect, but again... money is a people concept, absolutely open to debate

Indigo: A thief pickpocketing you isn't going to help you if you need it

Craigh: Obviously not. After all, we aren't carrying any valuable items we took from people by force on this ship, are we?

Indigo: Sure we are

Youtargim: Does Knotty count?

Bixi Fizzlebang: yells up from the hold “We bought him!”

Raelynn: Bixi paid for him. Quite a bit for a... pig...

Bixi Fizzlebang: And he ran away from a cruel jerk that we paid!

Youtargim: What a Pig

Raelynn: He could at least smell a bit better.

So as you are rowing and sailing

Craigh: [SKILL] Observation [MOD:INT] (vs. Target 15) [SUCCESS by 1] [d20 = 14]

Craigh is on lookout duty.

The time is 9:00 AM

Craigh: Indigo! Looks like ship-to-ship fighting up ahead. And some boarding action too.

Indigo: Pirates!

Lanek: is it a raid or piracy?

Raelynn: Can we just... go around them?

Indigo: Maybe we can just sail past it

Lanek: damn he beat me to it

Raelynn: Am I rowing hard?

Lanek: I’m rowin hard

Lanek: so if you ain't, we might be circlin

Raelynn: [CHECK] Strength (vs. Target 11) [FAILURE by 3] [d20 = 14]

Daphene: [CHECK] Strength (vs. Target 17) [SUCCESS by 7] [d20 = 10]

Raelynn: I'm trying, but my hands are all cracked today after that cold storm.

Lanek: [CHECK] Strength (vs. Target 11) [FAILURE by 4] [d20 = 15]

Licornah: [CHECK] Strength (vs. Target 8) [SUCCESS by 4] [d20 = 4]

Indigo: Did you look through the spyglass? Is it bugbears?

And yes, one of the ships is full of bugbears.

Raelynn: I thought we were trying to sneak around and ignore them...

Indigo: Youtargim! Swing by and let's see what's happening

Youtargim: [SKILL] Seamanship [MOD:DEX] (vs. Target 15) [SUCCESS by 0] [d20 = 15]

Youtargim brings the Buttercup closer to the two ships that are fighting with each other

Indigo: [SKILL] Boating [MOD:WIS] (vs. Target 10) [SUCCESS by 6] [d20 = 4]

Lanek: [SKILL] Boating [MOD:WIS] (vs. Target 14) [SUCCESS by 6] [d20 = 8]

Howard Plum: [SKILL] Statecraft [MOD:CHA] (vs. Target 8) [FAILURE by 4] [d20 = 12]

Indigo: The human ship rammed that bugbear ship. It's so damaged it's probably gonna sink

Indigo: HELLO!!

Bugbear : [Translation] They have reinforcements!

Bugbear : [Translation] Take the ship now! NOW~

Lanek: the human ship has some damage to its hull but I don't think it's gonna sink

Indigo: It's got a great big hole in the side!

Human, Sailor/Fisherman: Hello the Knarr!!!!

Lanek: I don't think the human ship is gonna sink. the bugbear ship is though

Indigo: Why are you attacking the other ship?

You can spot at least a dozen bugbears and a dozen humans in the chaos of fighting

Indigo: You're going to sink her

Human, Sailor/Fisherman: They are pirate! Drown them all!

Bugbear [Bullywug]: [Translation] Ready to charge! On my mark! One Two Three

Daphene: looks at Yout

Bugbear : [Translation] Ready to charge! On my mark! One Two Three

Youtargim: What do we do Admiral?

Lanek: nobody has a spell to understand them?

Lanek: I ain’t never learned no bugbear talk

Indigo: This is a mess. The only sailing bugbears I have ever seen have been pirates. Including the ones that took me and sold me to Red Cloak

Raelynn: I thought Yout spoke Bugbear. He did speak it before.

Youtargim: Anyone want to look at

Craigh: I didn't prepare the right spell for it, or I could.

Youtargim: No I speak jotun

Youtargim: I was talking in the giant tongue

Lanek: well see if they speak the giant tongue

Youtargim: some bugbears understand that,

Indigo: They say they are fighting pirates and I'm not sure I wanna save pirates who sell people

Raelynn: Oh...

Lanek: well yeah, if they're right, me neither

Lanek: but if they're wrong, that's a different thing

Youtargim: Who do we want to save?

Daphene: Well, we have a pirate here as well

Lanek: I don't hold with slavers.

Youtargim: Looks at the young halfling girl, who would you side with?

Raelynn: Are we sure they're pirates?

Indigo: I don't wanna save anyone really. The other ship just rammed them cuz they were bugbears

Daphene: I do not side with anyone, this is not my battle

Youtargim: How many ports are there? Does anyone know? Howard? Rae?

Youtargim: I heard you talk about Dryads Lair City, and now Borts Beach, are there other ports nearby?

Indigo: I think Borts is the closest port from here

Raelynn: Umm let me think....

Youtargim: I want to know if they might be coming up behind us at Borts and say we did not help them, which ever of them makes it

Youtargim: Do bugbears bring their ships into Borts or Dryads Lair?

Indigo: Yeah well ...

Indigo: I don't think bugbears bring their ships into human ports ...

Daphene: Did they ask for help?

Indigo: Do they?

Indigo: scratches his head

Raelynn: I can cast Zone of Truth, but I suppose only those we understand we can know if they're telling the truth.

Indigo: Maybe I don't know bugbear speak

Raelynn: The humans we could understand at least. But I suppose they might not be willing to talk much if they're being attacked.

Indigo: HEY HUMANS! YOU SUNK THEIR SHIP. YOU SHOULD PROBABLY JUST GO NOW

Human, Sailor/Fisherman: If we sunk their ship we get to keep it for salvage!

Craigh: If they sink it, won't it be on the bottom of the river?

Indigo: Sure. Mind if we save the drowning ones so they don't all just die?

Indigo: shrugs at Craigh

Human, Sailor/Fisherman: The only good bugbear is a dead bugbear

Indigo: They seem to have a plan

Human, Sailor/Fisherman: HEY! You have Elves! You should be helping us!

Craigh: So did Athar the Dim. He was never heard from again.

Raelynn: What?

Craigh: grins

Daphene: I'm in favor of saving whoever we can, but those humans seem extremely rude

Indigo: But what if they kill you first? We can take the non swimming ones and you get the ship

Human, Sailor/Fisherman: ARRGGG

As he takes a spear through the chest too busy yelling at you and not watching out for the battle

SPLASH

Raelynn: Do we... do we save him?

Indigo: Yeah

Indigo: Craigh can you lasso that one?

Raelynn: This is why I prefer land. So confusing out here...

Youtargim is keeping you off of the combat about 20 yards

Slowly circling around them

Indigo: Pull her in for a rescue Youtargim!

Craigh: It's only confusing if you worry about it. Pick a side, and help it. Or neither and move on.

Youtargim: Will do

Youtargim: [SKILL] Seamanship [MOD:DEX] (vs. Target 15) [SUCCESS by 14] [d20 = 1]

Indigo: Craigh or Raelynn can you see if you can catch that human before he drowns?

Youtargim: He sails the Buttercup STRAIGHT through the two ships separating them, pushing them apart with the hull of the Buttercup and coming out the other side

So overall what happens: The Buttercup slices through the two boats that are fighting, dislodging them from each other and scattering the humans and bugbears who are fighting into their ships and into the water

Rae spots two humans in the water, one with the spear but another who is swimming and she snags him with the lasso and pulls him back to the ship

Craigh on the other side of the ship wraps his lasso around the torso of a bugbear and manages to bind it up, then he hauls on it to bring it closer to your ship as you sail through the new gap

You have those two in control as you sail past and away

Craigh: has wrapped his end of the rope around a stanchion so he doesn't drop it.

You have the two still in the water, up out enough to breathe but not enough for them to be on deck with you

Craigh: Think we'll catch any sharks this way?

Youtargim: Are there sharks here?

Indigo: shakes his head

Indigo: What a mess

Youtargim: Maybe those mermen?

Craigh: shrugs

Raelynn: I don't know, but shouldn't we bring them up? We can't just drag them along.

Youtargim: Agreed Indigo

Raelynn: Oh! I'd love to meet a merman. Thistle made me jealous I missed the last one.

Indigo: We should get the human to his boat. It can still sail it looks like

Indigo: looks to see how the bugbear boat is doing

Raelynn: Wait go back again?

the bugbear boat is listing to the side, they seem to be tossing cargo into the water to try and lighten the load and shift the balance

No hand to hand fighting currently but the humans are bringing bows out to shoot at the bugbears

Daphene: You there! Human! What happened?

Human, Sailor/Fisherman: The pirates stole a flock of sheep

Human, Sailor/Fisherman: We gave chase

Human, Sailor/Fisherman: Can I get up there please

Human, Sailor/Fisherman: I can't swim

Indigo: They had a boat full of sheep?

Indigo: I didn't see any sheep

It looks like the cargo they are tossing out, could be sheep, some look dead and floating bales of wool

Indigo: looks back at the boat

Craigh: See? There you go Daphene. The burglar and the owner.

Indigo: Yeah that could be sheep

Indigo: Pull him up please

Raelynn: [CHECK] Strength (vs. Target 11) [SUCCESS by 5] [d20 = 6]

Rae hauls him up to the surface

Raelynn: Oh good. I was getting tired.

Human, Sailor/Fisherman: THANK YOU

Human, Sailor/Fisherman: Kisses Rae's hand

Raelynn: You're welcome!

Human, Sailor/Fisherman: Thank you thank you thank you

Human, Sailor/Fisherman: I thought I was going to drown

Indigo: Do you want us to take you back to your ship?

Human, Sailor/Fisherman: Yes

Raelynn: I'm glad you didn't. It's a horrible way to go.

Human, Sailor/Fisherman: Let's ram those bastards

Indigo: sighs

Human, Sailor/Fisherman: and sink them

Daphene: Did you go after them intending to kill them, or intending to try and get the stolen goods back?

Indigo: You already did that

Raelynn: You already lost a crew for some sheep. Breed more and let this loss go.

Raelynn: I'm sure you'll be lambing soon with what's left.

Daphene: nods towards Rae

Human, Sailor/Fisherman: Yes they took some of our best Ewes

Raelynn: Farming isn't easy, but is it worth losing more people?

Indigo: So what do we do with that one?

Raelynn: Or potentially almost drowning again?

Human, Sailor/Fisherman: You are here we can't lose

Indigo: points towards Craigh

Human, Sailor/Fisherman: with a ship this big, they will have to give in

Raelynn: Or we trade them their friend for some sheep back, repair their boat, and call it even.

Human, Sailor/Fisherman: And you are not the Navy, you will not keep any of our stuff

Raelynn: Er, if we can talk to them...

Raelynn: HEY! You in the water! Do you understand us?

Bugbear : [Translation] snarls

Raelynn: Um, maybe a different language?

Bugbear: struggling in his bonds, gnashing his teeth

Raelynn : [Translation] What about this one?

Bugbear : [Translation] Just let me near you you filthy elf

Bugbear: snarling and showing his teeth to Rae

Raelynn: Yeah, I don't understand you, and that might not be fair, but it means we'll not be able to... parlay or whatever!

Daphene: If you understand us, hold up your left hand and point to the sun!

Raelynn: gives him a big bright smile

He is wrapped up in the rope arms bound and dangling in the water

Raelynn: shrugs

Raelynn: I tried. All you, Admiral.

Indigo: I don't think he understands

Indigo: You had a good idea to trade the bugbear for what is left of the sheep

Indigo: We have to take the man back anyway

Raelynn: Unfortunately I don't speak other languages or have the right spells for it.

Indigo: Let's go back and see if we can save any sheep

Craigh: slaps his forehead.

Craigh: I'm an idiot!

Indigo: No you're not!

Raelynn: Why?

Craigh: Yes I am! I have scrolls with Comprehend Languages on them\

Raelynn: Oh! You can use that! I'm sure we'll have time to make more once we get to Dryads Lair.

Howard Plum: You're going to ... touch him?

Daphene: Can you also speak them with one of those?

Howard Plum: No you can only understand them

Craigh: Nope, but whoever casts it can understand them at least. It can be me or Howard.

Howard Plum: I don't want to touch him!

Raelynn: That's a good idea!

Howard Plum: Or her ...

Daphene: Does it matter if we can understand him if we can not communicate back?

Craigh: Maybe he can understand us, we don't know.

Daphene: Ah, fair point

Human, Sailor/Fisherman: What are you debating?

Raelynn: If you want to try, I'm game. Otherwise I guess we... drop off this guy and... go on our way as he tries to convince us to help?

Human, Sailor/Fisherman: Just cut the rope and let it drown

Craigh: So, I guess it's up to me then. Can someone haul him up a bit so I can reach him?

Raelynn: [CHECK] Strength (vs. Target 11) [FAILURE by 1] [d20 = 12]

Daphene: [CHECK] Strength (vs. Target 17) [SUCCESS by 6] [d20 = 11]

Raelynn: Sorry. My hands are tired.

Daphene: I've got him

Craigh: Craigh reads the Comprehend Languages scroll

Raelynn: Look here, mister. We don't kill things willy nilly without good reason so just be quiet for a second.

Bugbear : [Translation] What are you going to do with me

Craigh: Can you understand me?

Daphene : [Translation] Or can you understand this?

Bugbear : [Translation] Stop your babbling and just hit me you weak bastard

Daphene : [Translation] Or maybe you understand this?

Craigh: Yeah, doesn't seem like he can understand me. Wants to know what we're going to do with him, and/or to stop babbling and just hit him.

Indigo: that sounds like a bugbear

Craigh: Not to mention all the aspersions upon Lanek's mother.

Indigo: They fight

The bugbear does not seem to respond properly to Craigh, it snarls at Daphene when she speaks Elvish, but does not seem to actually understand, just knows what it sounds like

Raelynn: Oh wait! I have an idea!

Raelynn: [SKILL] Artistic Ability [MOD:WIS] (vs. Target 16) [SUCCESS by 4] [d20 = 12]

Raelynn: takes out some paper, draws a clear sketch about trading bug bear for sheep

Raelynn: shows it to bugbear

Daphene : [Translation] Don't suppose you understand this? Hellooooo?

Raelynn: looks to Craigh for translation

Bugbear: Snarls at the drawing Rae shows him

Craigh: Very eloquent.

Hard to say if snarling at the drawing or the fact she is an elf

Raelynn: Well that's rude. I'm not feeling nice anymore.

Raelynn: Do what you want. I tried to help you!

Indigo: Bugbears are like that

Daphene: Can you swim??

Indigo: It's like trying to be nice to goblins. It just doesn't work usually

Daphene: mimes swimming

Raelynn: I thought someone told me about some bugbear named Billy.

Craigh: That doesn't sound like a bugbear name.

It is ignoring the halfling and watching the elf

hungry

Raelynn: gives him a rude gesture

Indigo: Yeah and he was the only one in a every single bugbear we have ever seen

Raelynn: shrugs

Raelynn: I think Jilly told me? And you know Jilly names.

Indigo: Remember the giant basement?

Raelynn: Oh. True.

Raelynn: Hmm. So we just... get rid of him and... um, do pirate things?

Indigo: Let's take the man back and see if we can lasso some of his sheep back to his ship

Youtargim: We should set him down on shore

Craigh: I can unhook the rope at any time.

Youtargim: Or on his boat

Youtargim: We rescued him

Raelynn: And keep dragging the bugbear?

Indigo: yes and give the bugbear back

Raelynn: Well Craigh rescued him.

Craigh: And he hasn't said Thank You yet either.

Indigo: laughs

Youtargim: Leave him on his boat, we can try to get some sheep

Raelynn: No, he's just giving me a very unkind look.

Daphene: Do we have something that floats that we could give him to cling to, then release him?

Raelynn: I'll let you boat people do....whatever we're going to do, then.

Human, Sailor/Fisherman: Are you people crazy?

Indigo: Ready to head back?

Human, Sailor/Fisherman: Just toss it overboard

Craigh: Depends on who you ask

Human, Sailor/Fisherman: and we can get some of our cargo back

Indigo: He's all lasso'd he can't do anything

Human, Sailor/Fisherman: Turn it in for a reward then

Craigh: peers over the edge of the railing.

Indigo: We'll take you back. Youtargim, ready?

Craigh: technically, we never brought it on board, so it's already overboard.

Youtargim: Yes Admiral Indigo, Setting a course

Youtargim: He says very formally to impress the new people

Youtargim: [SKILL] Seamanship [MOD:DEX] (vs. Target 15) [SUCCESS by 0] [d20 = 15]

Youtargim steers the Buttercup back around behind the bugbear boat and you cut him loose to flounder a bit before he grabs onto a broken oar

Then you come around the stern of the boat and can help try to gather some of the bundles of wool and soggy sheep trying to swim

Indigo: Here ewe sheep!

Craigh: Has Zayden fixed his fishing rods yet? They could have been helpful here.

Craigh: I wish I knew how to Identify. This magic rope the goddess gave me could be useful here.

Craigh and Raelynn start lassoing sheep and wool to give back to the humans.

Indigo: See! You'll get some sheep back!

Youtargim admiring her rope skills

so you end up with a total of 4 sheep

and one bonus bundle of wool

and get them dragging over to the fisherman's boat

Currently the bugbears are trying to salvage their boat and it seems they are trying to move away

the humans are gathering things and trying to repair the hole in the hull to at least let less water in

Indigo: We got you some sheep back so it wasn't a complete loss

The group agrees to letting both sides just be

and moving off towards your destination

which we will reach by this evening

The time is 5:00 PM
