The 3rd Watch of the night begins with Zora, Roth and Temp

Vee Barlett: Alright y'all, drop the anchor. I'm goin' to bed unless ya need anything else.

Rothuss Carder: zzzzzzzzz

So Temp comes up on deck

Rothuss is supposed to be there, but apparently Vee did not wake him

Temperance: rubs her eyes and stretches, looking out into the water.

Inv Zora Polasis: Good morning or late evening

Inv Zora Polasis: Everything has been quiet tonight

Vee Barlett: kicks Rothuss and goes to lay down.

Temperance: Fortunate that it has. Good morning... I believe?

Vee Barlett: Get up and drop the anchor, or I drop it on you.

Vee Barlett: rolls over and goes to sleep.

Rothuss Carder: Promises, promises

Rothuss Carder: rolls over and staggers out.

Inv Zora Polasis: Good morning Rothuss

Temperance: [SKILL] Observation [MOD:INT] (vs. Target 13) [FAILURE by 5] [d20 = 18]

Temperance: squints out into the water but cannot see much from her vantage point.

Inv Zora Polasis: See something?

Rothuss Carder: grunts and yawns

Temperance: No... I thought perhaps I should try to watch out for anything, but so far, nothing yet.

Temperance: nods lightly.

Rothuss Carder: looks around

Temperance: At least, not from where I can see.

Rothuss Carder: Where's the anchor?

Inv Zora Polasis: under the ship?

Inv Zora Polasis: I didn't see Vee drop it before she went down to sleep

Rothuss Carder: She told me to drop the anchor

Rothuss Carder: Where is it?

Inv Zora Polasis: It's that lever thing you pulled before, right?

Temperance: How did you drop the anchor the last time you stopped the boat?

Temperance: Ah, a lever.

Temperance: I suppose that makes sense.

Inv Zora Polasis: maybe we should just let the boat go this time and see what happens

Rothuss Carder: [CHECK] Intelligence (vs. Target 13) [SUCCESS by 9] [d20 = 4]

Rothuss Carder: Found it!

Rothuss Carder: pulls the lever

Inv Zora Polasis: Very good!

Temperance: stands still to see if the boat stops moving.

Temperance: settles down near the center of the boat and takes out box again.

Temperance: This key is quite a curious one. With all the hub-bub about the deceased pirate and all.

Temperance: What did you say was his name again?

Inv Zora Polasis: The Dread Pirate Firebeard

Rothuss Carder: I mean, we've seen some undead already. Think he's one too?

Temperance: Yes. I'm not too familiar with pirates and their legends. If he is an undead, it would do us well to find out how he was brought back in the first place.

Temperance: Or perhaps he could be a spirit? Like the ones Levi kept seeing for a while.

Rothuss Carder: Invisible ghost monkey pirates?

Inv Zora Polasis: He would have to be quite an advanced undead to be able to pirate a ship and such. Like a vampire or something. Zombies and ghouls just wander around like ... zombies and ghouls. They aren't exactly known for their thinking abilities

Inv Zora Polasis: I don't know much about ghosts

Rothuss Carder: I've heard most pirates aren't too bright to start with either

Temperance: rummages through her bag, taking out a quill and a notebook to scribble some notes.

Inv Zora Polasis: Oh I don't know. You would have to be somewhat smart to be successful, don't you think? Otherwise you wouldn't be a pirate for very long

Temperance: It could also be very immense luck. Not that I know any pirates, but I suppose they wouldn't rely solely on luck for all their ventures.

Inv Zora Polasis: He must have access to some kind of magic to create this green glowy footprint signature of his

Inv Zora Polasis: Did your ghost friends leave glowy signatures like that?

Temperance: Er... not that I've seen? I haven't heard of Levi mentioning anything about glowing residue, either.

Inv Zora Polasis: So it may go to my original thought that this is someone trying to pretend to be Firebeard

Inv Zora Polasis: But we shall see

Temperance: A fraud doing some kidnapping? Hm... I suppose that sounds more realistic than a vampire pirate. I suppose it'd be wise to keep all avenues open.

Inv Zora Polasis: I think we shall have many questions for the Duke when we see him. I would like to see what evidence he has

Temperance: Yes, it would be best to gather more information for clarity's sake. It might help narrow it down a bit.

Temperance: It makes me wonder how the key and fragments of keys fit into all of this...

Inv Zora Polasis: I'm sure. But keys can lead to good things

Inv Zora Polasis: So where is your home church? Is it hard for you to be away?

Temperance: The Cathedral, actually. To some people's chagrin. I was more accustomed to written work while I was there, so venturing out to experience the world is... well, different territory.

Rothuss Carder: You'll see lots of different with this group.

Temperance: I'm not sure if I can decide if I like venturing out more in comparison to sitting and completing more written work. Each has its pros and cons, I suppose.

Temperance: smiles lightly.

Temperance: I've already seen quite a bit of variation, yes. Been a whirlwind of... er, events?

Inv Zora Polasis: Most priests I have seen like to be close to worship and don't venture out much. It is a very adventuresome thing to venture out on missions

Temperance: And yourself? Did you decide you wanted to be an investigator from the moment you joined priesthood? Or did they encourage you to take that route?

Inv Zora Polasis: Oh no! I was dropped at the Cathedral. They educated and trained me. Vee's father ... and mine ... paid for it

Inv Zora Polasis: I am grateful and respect the church greatly for everything they have done for me, but I don't think I was meant for the priesthood

Inv Zora Polasis: So I investigate

Rothuss Carder: Any serial killers?

Inv Zora Polasis: laughs

Inv Zora Polasis: Not yet

Inv Zora Polasis: This is probably the biggest case I have been assigned to so far

Rothuss Carder: You'll knock it out of the park

Temperance: Ah, I do remember you mentioning that at some point. What do usually investigate?

Inv Zora Polasis: I'm just here to assist you all

Rothuss Carder: Oh. *We'll* knock it out of the park

Temperance: It is odd that we haven't much information to go off of, but... I suppose we should expect a little vagueness.

Inv Zora Polasis: Mostly internal church issues and accounting malfeasance and so forth. So far at least

Inv Zora Polasis: You know how important accurate donation accounting and property is to the church

Temperance: smiles stiffly at the thought.

Inv Zora Polasis: The church is involved in much property and trade and so troubles can arise

Temperance: I suppose it could get complicated keeping track of records of who purchased what and what time and how the values of properties rise and fall.

Rothuss Carder: I mean, if they knew everything already they wouldn't have to send us.

Inv Zora Polasis: And they are helpful to their patrons and so this is why we are assisting the Duke I imagine

Inv Zora Polasis: Exactly Rothuss

Inv Zora Polasis: Some times with sensitive matters it is best to hold back information from letters and messages. So much information can be picked up by divination or other means so it can be better to wait until the parties are in person

Inv Zora Polasis: Like when I asked for divination help with the tax stamp ...

Inv Zora Polasis: And got a geas put on that poor Jericho priest

Rothuss Carder: No simple request goes un-geased.

Inv Zora Polasis: The information was helpful at least

Inv Zora Polasis: laughs

Temperance: That makes sense. And here I was wondering how that all happened. I met Jericho at the end of his... er, tax stamp journey, so I wasn't able to fully grasp what was going on.

Temperance: laughs lightly.

Inv Zora Polasis: I thought the bishop would be helpful for helpfulness sake and then the geas got put on Jericho. I would rather it have been put on me since I had insisted on the request.

Inv Zora Polasis: But perhaps because I am not a priest I was not worthy of it

Rothuss Carder: starts doing some calisthenics and warm-ups to try and get woke up fully.

The time is 7:30 AM

The date is Be____de, 5th Sin (Late Summer), 587 SGR

Young Moon's phase is Full Moon

Old Moon's phase is Waning Gibbous

Inv Zora Polasis: nice peaceful watch

Inv Zora Polasis: Looks like it will be a beautiful day

Inv Zora Polasis: [SKILL] Observation [MOD:INT] (vs. Target 14) [FAILURE by 2] [d20 = 16]

Temperance: So far, it looks rather peaceful. A moment of respite.... hopefully ...

Temperance: looks out into the water again.

Temperance: [SKILL] Observation [MOD:INT] (vs. Target 13) [SUCCESS by 9] [d20 = 4]

Rothuss Carder: The empty scenery gets boring quick.

Inv Zora Polasis: yes. hopefully we will get there soon

Rothuss Carder: kicks up into a handstand against the mast.

Temperance: It's good to know that you have to be worthy enough to receive a geas. Though I wonder how they decide if someone is worthy or not. Inv Zora Polasis: I'm not sure. It all happened so fast

Temperance: glances in Rothuss' direction.

Inv Zora Polasis: He's very athletic isn't he?

Temperance: If we have him stay still any longer he might use all that extra energy to climb that mast.

Temperance: looks on with a bit of mirth.

Rothuss Carder: Want me to?

Temperance: Up to you. A good check in with your climbing skills that you've been practicing?

Rothuss Carder: Yeah. Sure!

Rothuss Carder: drops back down to his feet.

Rothuss Carder: I mean, using the rigging is kinda cheating.

Rothuss Carder: kicks off his boots to use his bare feet for better traction.

Rothuss Carder: Hup!

Rothuss Carder: [SKILL] Climb Walls [PERCENT:Climb Walls] (vs. Target 65) [SUCCESS by 2] [d100 = 63]

Inv Zora Polasis: claps

Rothuss Carder: I can't see anything but water from up here!

Inv Zora Polasis: That's a good thing

Temperance: I hope it stays that way! If we do see something that means we've got work to do!

Rothuss Carder: Is it?

Inv Zora Polasis: better than you seeing sharks and scrags

Temperance: I'm glad those encounters ended rather quickly. It was my first time seeing a scrag.

Inv Zora Polasis: I guess we should get everyone up ...

Rothuss Carder: hangs upside down by his knees from a spar.

Inv Zora Polasis: How do you usually rouse the crew?

Temperance: Oh, er... just go downstairs and shake them one by one... usually...?

Rothuss Carder: I have a horn.

Temperance: That works just as well.

Rothuss Carder: It's ... over there... *points vaguely to one side*

Inv Zora Polasis: A horn sounds efficient

Inv Zora Polasis: May I borrow it?

Rothuss Carder: gives her a thumbs up while upside down from the spar.

Inv Zora Polasis: takes the horn and goes below deck

Inv Zora Polasis: looks at it a bit and then gives it a try

Temperance: I would recommend not staying upside down for too long, it will make you lightheaded.

Temperance: covers her hears, anticipating the sound of the horn.

Vee Barlett: AH FUCKIN' A! WHAT THE HELL, ROTHUSS??

Inv Zora Polasis: Good morning all!

Vee Barlett: Oh, sis? Well fuck you, too!

Inv Zora Polasis: It's time to rise and shine!

Lirtimya: Sits up and glares in the direction of where to horn sounded from

Vee Barlett: Ugh, I'm getting up, I'm gettin' up. Damn! Better get that anchor up before I get up there!

Inv Zora Polasis: I thought a horn would be faster than waking everyone individually

Inv Zora Polasis: hurries back on deck

Vee Barlett: Yeah, I'm gonna remember this fer later, don't you worry!

Inv Zora Polasis: Lever!! Which lever

Temperance: hears Vee's angry yelling from above deck.

Temperance: Um, that one!

Temperance: points to the direction of the lever.

Inv Zora Polasis: The horn did not go over well

Inv Zora Polasis: pulls lever for anchor

Rothuss Carder: Ya did great! *thumbs up again*

Inv Zora Polasis: Thank you Tempe

Inv Zora Polasis: puts horn back where she found it

Rothuss Carder: swings back and forth on the spar and waves at people as they come up from below.

Vee Barlett: grumbles and comes up stairs

Lirtimya: Grabs her stuff and heads above deck

Vee and Lirtimya try to figure out where they are and to navigate the boat.

Vee Barlett: [SKILL] Navigation [MOD:INT] (vs. Target 10) [FAILURE by 4] [d20 = 14]

Vee Barlett: [SKILL] Observation [MOD:INT] (vs. Target 12) [FAILURE by 2] [d20 = 14]

Vee Barlett: Ugh, matey I hope you awake.

Vee Barlett: I can't think. Rude awakenin'

Vee Barlett: Damn we're REALLY lost.

Lirtimya: [SKILL] Navigation [MOD:INT] (vs. Target 14) [FAILURE by 6] [d20 = 20]

Lirtimya: [SKILL] Observation [MOD:INT] (vs. Target 16) [FAILURE by 1] [d20 = 17]

Vee Barlett: [SKILL] Weather Sense [MOD:WIS] (vs. Target 13) [FAILURE by 6] [d20 = 19]

Vee Barlett: Where the hell are we? Ya put that anchor down, yeah?

Rothuss Carder: Yep! I pulled the lever.

Vee Barlett: Anchor.

Rothuss Carder: Oof. Time to come down..

So the group is not sure if they are on the right track, they are going forward because what else can they do, but they are very uneasy about it

The others on the boat take a look around.

Temperance: [SKILL] Observation [MOD:INT] (vs. Target 13) [FAILURE by 6] [d20 = 19]

Temperance: [CHECK] Intelligence (vs. Target 13) [SUCCESS by 6] [d20 = 7]

Inv Zora Polasis: [SKILL] Observation [MOD:INT] (vs. Target 14) [SUCCESS by 8] [d20 = 6]

Temperance: [CHECK] Wisdom (vs. Target 16) [SUCCESS by 13] [d20 = 3]

Lirtimya: [SKILL] Weather Sense [MOD:WIS] (vs. Target 13) [SUCCESS by 0] [d20 = 13]

Rothuss Carder: sits up on the spar until the horizon stops spinning.

Temperance: I did warn you about feeling lightheaded...

Temperance: shakes her head lightly.

Temperance: searches for a possible map in her bag.

Rothuss Carder: I can fill you in. There's water over there! *points left* And water over there *points right* And we're heading straight for more water!

Temperance: I suppose so far if there's only water we're alright for now.

Vee Barlett: [SKILL] Land Scent (Mizzen) [PERCENT:Land Scent (Mizzen)] (vs. Target 50) [SUCCESS by 38] [d100 = 12]

So Vee takes a few minutes and then reorients herself and points, That way

Rothuss Carder: Perfect! That patch of water looks just right!

Vee Barlett: sniffs

Vee Barlett: Ok, yeah Mizzen that way. I can smell it.

Vee Barlett: Go wake up a bit more, Matey. I'll take mornin' steerin'

Temperance: follows the direction she's pointing with raised brows, but shrugs.

Rothuss Carder: Look out! You're about to hit a piece of water!

Vee Barlett: If ya fall overboard, I ain't rescuin' you.

Temperance: laughs lightly.

Inv Zora Polasis: laughs and then looks at Vee and stops

Temperance: He was fine hanging upside down, I think he's having fun.

Vee Barlett: As long as it's outta my hair.

Vee Barlett: Is Levi awake?

Temperance: Yes, yes, and I'm sure you'll test out your new blade if anyone tries.

Temperance: To get in your hair, I mean.

Vee Barlett: flips her hair over her shoulder

Temperance: It's very pretty.

Temperance: And long.

Vee Barlett: So wes only about... I'd say a day from Mizzen. Guessin' we go to the Duke 'cause we shouldn't get distracted or some nonsense. Any other plans from there?

Vee Barlett: grins

Vee Barlett: Dad set me up with a good hair care routine. Love when he braids it.

Temperance: I think it's important to gather a little bit more information for clarity's sakes before we decide our next course of action. Meeting the Duke sounds like a good start.

Temperance: I'm glad you have good care routine. My hair just bounces all over the place when it's not bound tightly.

Vee Barlett: Hope it easy to do. I ain't met him yet.

Vee Barlett: Ya need good conditioner and more salt.

Vee Barlett: Contrary to popular thought, them ocean waters great for keepin' bounce and flyaways away.

Temperance: laughs lightly.

Temperance: I'll keep the salt and conditioner in mind. Perhaps when we're done with this whole Dread Pirate business I can stop by a shop.

Temperance: Zora seems to think we're either dealing with a fraud or some vampire pirate.

Vee Barlett: Ugh, can you imagine the hair on a dead pirate? Gross.

Vee Barlett: A vampire pirate? Ain't it too sunny for that?

Temperance: I think it'd be intriguing to see how the hair grows on a deceased human being... if we can call him human.

Vee Barlett: Would it grow? Thinkin' it falls off and gets maggoty.

Rothuss Carder: Yo ho ho and a Dead Pirate's Chest Hair!

Vee Barlett: Even a dead one got more chest hair than you, I bet.

Temperance: I suppose that would be more likely, but sometimes phenomena is different.

Vee Barlett: I just want to know how to get glowin' footprints.

Rothuss Carder: Am I supposed to be offended that I don't have a fur coat like a goat? 'Cuz you're yapping at the wrong guy for that.

Temperance: Perhaps through some sort of magic?

Temperance: The glowing footprints I mean. Not the chest hair.

Vee Barlett: Nah just sayin' you ain't got a manly look to ya yet. Still too kiddish.

Vee Barlett: Glowin' chest hair sounds.... concernin'

Vee Barlett: Hmm, if I had magic, what signature I want?

Temperance: Is transforming into merfolk considered a signature?

Temperance: grins lightly.

Temperance: [SKILL] Observation [MOD:INT] (vs. Target 13) [SUCCESS by 9] [d20 = 4]

Temperance: glances around as the boat moves.

Vee Barlett: Ooh, yeah think I can? I dunno.

Vee Barlett: Hmm, but they might not want my ties to them.

Vee Barlett: What about a blood handprint? Nah, too grim.

Rothuss Carder: Leave a knife stabbed into the wall!

Vee Barlett: Waste of a good knife, but not a bad start.

Temperance: How about a slash on the wall with a blade?

Rothuss Carder: Stab it twice into the wall leaving a V shape?

Temperance: It wouldn't waste your knife?

Vee Barlett: Oooh that maybe not bad... but it too directly connected to me? I really gotta think on this.

Vee Barlett: Well I ain't got magic yet so I can start simple and work my way up.

Rothuss Carder: They'd call you the dread pirate Five.

Vee Barlett: Oh now that a thought. V ain't for Vee but for Five throwin' them all off...

Inv Zora Polasis: It's really nice to know you wouldn't mind being tracked

Vee Barlett: Sigh, so maybe I do need magic. Ain't wantin' to be tracked, but I ain't a fan of bein' invisible in my deeds fully like someone I know.

Rothuss Carder: finally scales back down the mast, driven by hunger and boredom.

Vee Barlett: grins

Inv Zora Polasis: smiles

Lirtimya: Should I start breakfast cooking?

Vee Barlett: Go for it, matey. Or fishin'. Whichever. I'm bettin' thems hungry after bein' up early.

Lirtimya: [SKILL] Fishing [MOD:WIS] (vs. Target 13) [SUCCESS by 2] [d20 = 11]

So 9 people can feed from Lirtimya’s catch

Lirtimya: [SKILL] Cooking [MOD:INT] (vs. Target 16) [SUCCESS by 2] [d20 = 14]

Lirtimya: Food is ready

Inv Zora Polasis: It smells wonderful!

Vee Barlett: Thanks, matey! Eat some then we'll switch, yeah?

Lirtimya: Sounds good to me

Rothuss Carder: Thanks Lirt! *chews*

Temperance: Thank you for the food.

Temperance: smiles lightly.

Lirtimya: I hope it's as good as it smells

Temperance: It's delicious, thank you!

Vee Barlett: Ain't doubtin' if yer makin' it.

Once everyone’s eaten, Vee and Lirtimya check their course again.

Lirtimya: [SKILL] Observation [MOD:INT] (vs. Target 16) [SUCCESS by 13] [d20 = 3]

The group sees a very large shadow overhead

Wingspan is slightly longer than your boat is

Vee Barlett: quietly, “Damn, what is that?”

Temperance: Quite a large shadow, that.

Rothuss Carder: Welp, time for a nap. G'nite!

The group frantically runs through all the skills they have to develop a strategy for this terrifying encounter.

So the group gathers what they know and shares with each other: That looks to be a Roc, they are very rare, they are huge, they eat elephants, a fabled mythological creature that is bigger than a house, and it looks to be the same size as your boat

Rothuss Carder: So if it tries to fly off with our boat, which way should we swim?

Vee Barlett: The way wes already going.... it's huntin' but ain't sure what.....

Vee Barlett: Just lay low and hope it flies past us.

Lirtimya: I suggest we leave, while it is quite amazing to see such a rare creature, it is not worth our lives

Inv Zora Polasis: Can we make the boat less .. attractive?

Temperance: We can move things below deck, if that's what you mean?

Rothuss Carder: We'll need to move all you delectable morsels down below.

Vee Barlett: Yar, let's keep moving. Keep anything bright below deck. We want sails up if we wanna get out of here faster.

MeLange Covers his eyes to look at the creature

MeLange: whoa

Vee Barlett: Don't be movin' too fast to catch it's eye on deck.

Temperance: nods in understanding.

Melange can tell that:

Looking almost too big to be real, rocs are huge birds of prey that dwell in warm mountainous regions and are known for carrying off large animals (cattle, horses, elephants) for food. Rocs resemble large eagles, with either dark brown plumage or all golden feathers from head to tail. In a few rare instances, rocs of all red, black or white are sighted, but such sightings are often considered bad omens. These giant birds are 60 feet long from beak to tail feathers, with wingspans as wide as 120 feet. Combat: The roc swoops down upon prey, seizes it in powerful talons, and carries it off to the roc's lair to be devoured at leisure. The resulting damage is 3d6 per claw. Most of the time (95%), a roc carries off its prey only if both claws hit. If the prey was hit by only one claw, the roc usually lets go, then turns around and attempts another grab. Once the prey has been secured, the roc flies back to its nest. If the creature resists, the roc strikes with its beak, inflicting 4d6 points of damage per hit. Should a human, humanoid, or demi human be captured, there is a 65% chance that the victim's arms are both pinned to his sides, making impossible melee weapon attacks or spellcasting that requires hand gestures. A roc will let go of its prey if it suffers damage equal to a quarter of its hit points. A roc can pick up two targets simultaneously if they are within 10 feet of each other. A roc usually cruises at a height of about 300 feet, seeking out likely prey with its sharp eyes. When a good target is found, it swoops down silently. The stealth of this first attack imposes a -5 penalty to its opponents' surprise rolls. Habitat/Society: Roc lairs are vast nests made of trees, branches, and the like. They inhabit the highest mountains in warm regions. Rocs are not given to nesting close to each other, with a nest rarely being located within 20 miles of another nest. There is a 15% chance of finding 1d4+1 eggs in a roc nest. These eggs sell for 2d6x100 gp to merchants specializing in exotic items. As may be expected, rocs fight to the death to protect these nests and their contents, gaining a +1 bonus to their attack roll. The treasure of a roc is usually strewn about and below the nest, for the creature does not value such. It is the residue from its victims. If the roc has been seizing pack horses and mules, some of that treasure may be merchant's wares such as spices, rugs, tapestries, perfume, rich clothing, or jewels. The roc ranges for food three times a day; about an hour after sunrise, at noon, and an hour before sunset. If there are young in the nest, a fourth feeding, approximately two hours after noon, is added to keep the young strong and well-fed. Ecology: Rocs are occasionally tamed and used by cloud or storm giants. Good-aligned giants do not allow their rocs to attack civilized areas and the animals therein. As mentioned before, rocs do not nest too closely together, since such a high concentration of these hungry predators would deprive entire regions of its animal population. Rocs serve to keep down the number of large predators, as they are fond of ankheg, purple worms, and harpies. Thanks to the rocs' prodigious appetites, these creatures are not swarming about with impunity. It is said that roc feathers can be used in the manufacture of Quaal's feather tokens , as well as wings and brooms of flying. One race that has little love for rocs is dwarves. Dwarven mines located in remote mountains often have to contend with unruly rocs intent on protecting their territory. Attempts by the dwarves to tame rocs have all met with failure, so the accepted manner of dealing with rocs is to kill them and smash their eggs. Adventurers who happen on a community of mountain dwarves may find employment as roc hunters. Such groups would do well not to allow any druids to find this out.

Inv Zora Polasis: takes all the leftover fish below deck

Inv Zora Polasis: can we be below deck and see what's happening above?

Vee Barlett: If ya leave the hatch open and peak out.

Inv Zora Polasis: Can we hide and see if it passes us by?

Temperance: If the space is too tight we can take turns looking out the hatch.

Temperance: Or have someone designated to watch.

Inv Zora Polasis: I mean it probably wouldn't take the whole boat, right?

Vee Barlett: Yar. Ship will drift with these winds if ain't someone at the wheel, but ain't a problem if less of ya on deck.

Lirtimya: It's already hunting, isn't it? We just need to stay out of its way, and hope whatever it's hunting is larger than us

Vee Barlett: Nah, boat ain't tasty so hopefully past by us...

Vee Barlett: nods to Lirt's comment

Inv Zora Polasis: Pull the anchor lever?

Vee Barlett: Just keepin' an eye on what it might be huntin....

Lirtimya: Staying still is not a good idea

Inv Zora Polasis: goes to hide below deck

Vee Barlett: Hmm, suppose we could. If it like a cat, no movement is fine....

Rothuss Carder: follows Zora

Temperance: follows Zora down the hatch.

Inv Zora Polasis: I'll come up if there's trouble

Vee Barlett: goes to put down the anchor and lower sails as slowly and quietly as she can.

Vee Barlett: grabs some loose rope just in case

MeLange: oh hey that a Roc!

Rothuss Carder: Do we have a lifeboat on this thing?

MeLange: They usually hunt for about an hour or so, shouldn't be so bad

Lirtimya: Just tell me where to point us captain

Vee, MeLange and Zora take a moment to reflect on the situation.

Vee Barlett: [CHECK] Wisdom (vs. Target 14) [SUCCESS by 0] [d20 = 14]

MeLange: [CHECK] Wisdom [+2] (vs. Target 9) [FAILURE by 7] [d20-2 = 16]

Inv Zora Polasis: [CHECK] Wisdom (vs. Target 14) [SUCCESS by 13] [d20 = 1]

Inv Zora Polasis: If this Roc is out this far, it must mean its nest is close by

Inv Zora Polasis: On Mizzen or some other island close by

Vee Barlett: Huntin' this far out? Hmm, might be quick then if it ain't normally a long flighted flyer.

Lirtimya: Well at least it would make the trip to Mizzen faster

Vee Barlett: Maybe it from Siren's

Inv Zora Polasis: If it was Mizzen you probably would have heard of such a rare creature there

Inv Zora Polasis: My guess would be another one

Vee Barlett: Yar so thinkin' Siren's Call as it lots of little islands and less tame.

Temperance casts Bless at Vee Barlett

So the combination of Bless and lower sails, and most of the people hiding out of sight lets the Roc think that there is not any food here and it moves off farther north in search of a dolphin or shark

Vee Barlett: breathes a small sigh of relief

Vee Barlett: Y'all can come up now. It gone off to hunt elsewhere.

Lirtimya: Sighs in relief

Temperance: shuffles out from the lower deck.

Inv Zora Polasis: Good news!

Vee Barlett: Yar. I can do water threats but air hard to deal with. I ain't good with bows.

Rothuss Carder: zzzzzzzz

Temperance: I'm glad the creature missed us. You did say that they don't usually come this far out to sea, right?

Vee Barlett: Nah they land birds.

The time is 4:30 PM

The date is Be____de, 5th Sin (Late Summer), 587 SGR

Young Moon's phase is Full Moon

Old Moon's phase is Waning Gibbous

MeLange: what time is sunset?

Vee Barlett: holds fist up to the sun

Vee Barlett: Hmm... I’d say another three hours.

MeLange: they usually take a break till about an hour before sunset

Vee and Lirtimya try yet again to navigate the ship correctly.

Vee Barlett: [SKILL] Navigation [MOD:INT] (vs. Target 10) [FAILURE by 2] [d20 = 12]

The sails are good, the rudder is firm, you are heading due west into the sun

MeLange: nice firm rudder

Rothuss Carder: Row, row, row your boat, gently down the stream

The group takes a look around.

Temperance: [SKILL] Observation [MOD:INT] (vs. Target 13) [SUCCESS by 11] [d20 = 2]

So Temp and Lirt spot a weird spot of water just up ahead

and Mel is like WHOA!!!!

Temperance: Do you see that spot of water over there?

Vee Barlett: Water spout? They happen but ain't the right weather for it...

MeLange eyes wide and mouth open

Temperance: I'm not quite sure what it is...

Vee Barlett: Well best to avoid weird, er, water movement.

Temperance: Shall I try to cast Protection from Evil just in case?

Rothuss Carder: Evil water spouts?

Vee Barlett: Water ain't evil. Neutral at best.

MeLange: like room temperature water

Temperance: Just trying to prepare. At least I know they're not evil.

Vee Barlett: What not evil?

Rothuss Carder: Anybody got a towel? We can just dry it out.

Vee Barlett: Y'all just sayin' weird spot of water up ahead. You see somethin' in it?

Temperance: I assumed the weird spot of water was a creature moving under it.

Vee Barlett: Well without knowin' which creature ain't sure how to prepare for it. So we try to move around it.

MeLange: just like water

Lirtimya and Temperance ponder what they are seeing.

Lirtimya: [CHECK] Intelligence (vs. Target 16) [SUCCESS by 9] [d20 = 7]

Temperance: [CHECK] Wisdom (vs. Target 16) [SUCCESS by 9] [d20 = 7]

[ROUND 1]

a swarm of water (?) comes up over the side of the boat and swarms over Roth, moderately wounding him.

Vee Barlett: Well that ain't normal...

Vee Barlett: Lirt! Evaporate it with magic!

MeLange: Roth you ok?!

Rothuss Carder: gets knocked rolling

Rothuss Carder: Ow! Hell, that hurt!

Temperance: Casts Chant on the group

Rothuss Carder: draws his sabre and tries slashing through it, but misses.

Lirtimya: Casts Melf's Acid Arrow at the Water Elemental. With a critical hit, it moderately wounds the Elemental.

MeLange critically hits the Water Elemental with his Battle Axe but the Elemental resists the damage from the attack.

Vee Barlett : [Translation] Get off my ship!

Vee Barlett: [SKILL] Navigation [MOD:INT] (vs. Target 10) [FAILURE by 4] [d20 = 14]

Vee Barlett: tries to shake it loose but fails

Inv Zora Polasis: critically hits the water elemental with a haymaker punch, but it resists the damage

[ROUND 2]

Between Lirtimya’s acid arrows and the critical hits of Lirtimya, MeLange and Zora, the Water Elemental decides to leave the group alone. It sinks back into the sea.

Vee Barlett: Well that be interestin'

Vee Barlett: Good job, y'all. Beautiful uppercut, Zora.

Lirtimya: I'm getting pretty good with this arrow now

Vee Barlett: Yar, matey! You killin' it with that magic!

Rothuss Carder: tenderly feels at the bruise forming on the left side of his face.

Vee Barlett: Er, and maybe you can stop chantin' Tempe and heal up Rothuss so he ain't killed.

Inv Zora Polasis: Stuffy! Humph! Stuffy people punch water elementals? I think not

Vee Barlett: barks a laugh

Vee Barlett: Man I pressed yer button with that comment! Good. Makes ya want more to prove me wrong.

Vee Barlett: winks

Rothuss Carder: How in the hell I get punched by a wave?

Temperance: I'm glad it's gone. Anybody else hurt anywhere?

Temperance: glances around and nods.

Vee Barlett: Maybe his confidence, too, but ain't sure how to fix that.

Vee Barlett: I mean, I've been beaten up by waves body surfin' before but... not like that.

Temperance: No one else. I'm glad it managed to stay in one place.

Temperance: Casts Cure Light Wounds at Rothuss Carder making him only lightly wounded.

Rothuss Carder: Ahh... dang that feels good, Temperence.

Temperance: furrows her brows in confusion.

Temperance: It feels good to get punched in the face by water?

Rothuss Carder: No, the healing.

Rothuss Carder: Water punches hard.

Vee Barlett: You into some weird stuff, Roth.

Temperance: I suppose it gave you a stronger effect than my usual healing effects. Hm...

Rothuss Carder: You never noticed it feels good to not hurt anymore?

Vee Barlett: Oh, nah didn't hear that part. Only heard you like gettin' hurt by water.

Temperance: I'm glad you're feeling better, in any case.

Temperance: What was that creature anyhow? It seemed like a weird rise in the water at first...

Vee Barlett: shrugs

Vee Barlett: Maybe we can check the library in Mizzen.

Rothuss Carder: Stupid magic water.

Lirtimya: It was a water elemental

Temperance: A water elemental. At least we know the name now. Maybe I'll look more into it when we stop by the library.

Lirtimya: As far as I know, it's a thing not from here, elementals are pretty powerful, these are known for being a huge pain for ships, able to completely turn over smaller ships and stop larger ones

Temperance: Oh my, we were lucky to not have been turned over, then. Your acid arrows and Zora's punching really scared it off.

Temperance: takes out her notebook, making some quick notes about water elementals.

Lirtimya: I don't know if they can actually be hurt by physical attacks, since they're made of water

Vee Barlett: Smart one ya are, matey.

Temperance: It didn't seem like the axe was working as well. It makes sense, since it's so... malleable.

Vee Barlett: So in other words... Thorndike not givin' me magic almost got us killed? I'll tell Pa that.

Rothuss Carder: No fair being able to attack but not be attacked.

Rothuss Carder: Cheating stupid magic water.

Vee Barlett: I mean that's normal water, too.

Lirtimya: It's like hitting the ocean with a hammer and expecting it to crack

Temperance: Apparently they are very powerful, so I'm only glad that it didn't do more damage.

Rothuss Carder: I've never been hit with a left hook by a wave before.

Lirtimya: It's too malleable

Vee Barlett: Always a first time for everythin'

The time is 7:30 PM

The date is Be____de, 5th Sin (Late Summer), 587 SGR

Young Moon's phase is Full Moon

Old Moon's phase is Waning Gibbous

Temperance: In any case, I certainly hope we're heading in Mizzen's general direction.

The battle seems to have improved Vee and Lirt’s navigational skills as they check as the evening sets in.

Vee Barlett: [SKILL] Navigation [MOD:INT] (vs. Target 10) [SUCCESS by 4] [d20 = 6]

Vee Barlett: [SKILL] Land Scent (Mizzen) [PERCENT:Land Scent (Mizzen)] (vs. Target 50) [SUCCESS by 9] [d100 = 41]

Lirtimya: [SKILL] Navigation [MOD:INT] (vs. Target 14) [SUCCESS by 5] [d20 = 9]

So Lirt and Vee consult and realize.... they are not going to make it to Mizzen tonight unless they try to go through the night overnight

and get there very early in the morning

OR you go slower and arrive mid-morning

Vee Barlett: Well good news and bad news, y'all.

Vee Barlett: We ain't reachin' Mizzen tonight.

Inv Zora Polasis: That's fine. We don't want to get there in the middle of the night anyway do we?

Rothuss Carder: Just so long as we get there.

Inv Zora Polasis: Yes

Vee Barlett: Nah. And I'm still shook from that damn horn so ain't trustin' myself to try to get us there early. So we do watches, slow goin' and reach there by afternoon.

Temperance: nods lightly.

Vee Barlett: Well, mid-mornin' dependin'

Temperance: As long as we get there.

Vee Barlett: Well that always the plan.

Vee Barlett: [SKILL] Navigation [MOD:INT] (vs. Target 10) [SUCCESS by 6] [d20 = 4]

Vee Barlett: I can stay up so you can sleep, matey.

Vee Barlett: Get yer magic nap in.

MeLange: I'm up for an all nighter!

Vee Barlett: laughs

Vee Barlett: we can anchor at midnight and Lirt can start us sailin' in the morning.

Temperance: Casts Cure Light Wounds at MeLange bringing him to full health.

Temperance: Casts Cure Light Wounds at Vee Barlett bringing her to full health.

Temperance: stretches and waves before heading below deck.

1st Watch – Vee, MeLange and Zora

Vee Barlett: whistlin' while she navigates

MeLange: Remember that Roc? That was something huh

Inv Zora Polasis: I've never seen anything like that before

Vee Barlett: Giant ass bird. Cool, but best seen from a distance.

MeLange: Heh giant ass bird yea

MeLange: crazy something that big could fly

Vee Barlett: Wonderin' where it nest is.

MeLange: say there's usually some treasure about their nests, when they capture like horses and get change by accident

MeLange: Of course they don't care about Gold

Vee Barlett: I wonder how ya fight somethin' like that? Good shot with arrows, I supposin'?

Inv Zora Polasis: Like a dragon?

MeLange: Big big bird

Vee Barlett: Hey, Zora, ya any good with range weapons?

MeLange: does have dragon vibes

MeLange: feathered dragon

Inv Zora Polasis: Not at all I'm afraid.

Inv Zora Polasis: laughs

Vee Barlett: Hmm, damn. So we still gotta rely on Levi for range? Sad.

Inv Zora Polasis: I only have my rapier and my dagger

MeLange awkwardly chuckles

Vee Barlett: Dagger be good.

MeLange: rapier cool

MeLange: is it fun to use?

Inv Zora Polasis: I prefer the rapier so I don't have to get too close

MeLange: good call

Inv Zora Polasis: I think it's elegant

MeLange: oh it's classy as hell

Vee Barlett: Yar! Like me tridents. Good distance and still stab them. Dagger for when I wanna get personal.

Inv Zora Polasis: takes it out of it's sheath

MeLange: Trident is also VERY cool

MeLange: not sure it'd call it elegant though, more intimidating that is

Vee Barlett: grins

Vee Barlett: That be the point. Well, points.

Vee Barlett: laughs

Inv Zora Polasis: Yes the trident definitely sends a message

MeLange: and what about these?

MeLange: pulls out his axe and does a flare move

Inv Zora Polasis: Nice!

MeLange: Thanks!

MeLange relaxes

Vee Barlett: Fancy and get the job done. Like, trident you can kinda draw it out if yer feelin' mean, but ax just says, “I ain't dealin' with ya, death to you!”

MeLange: I like them, I think they suit me

MeLange: hey the axe does say that!

Vee Barlett: Like what are them jungle guys.... oh! Lumberjack!

Vee Barlett: Levi love them. Huh, maybe why he drawn to ya.

MeLange: They're ok

MeLange: could be could be... I'm sure there many reasons

Vee Barlett: Y'all got any stories for why ya chose yer weapon?

MeLange: I do but it's not a good story

Vee Barlett: Ain't goin' nowhere so might as well tell us.

MeLange: Guess what they have the big strong guy do all day?

Inv Zora Polasis: An interesting story?

Vee Barlett: Chop wood? Or somethin'?

MeLange: that's right, chopping wood

MeLange: nice guess Vee!

Vee Barlett: grins

MeLange: You spend enough time with a thing...

MeLange: it becomes a part of you, so the axe just felt natural, like getting out of bed in the morning

Vee Barlett: nods

Vee Barlett: Yer a natural with them, ain’t no doubtin' that.

MeLange: Thanks Vee

MeLange: Still loving that Trident though, so original

MeLange: don't see them much these days is what I mean

MeLange: they hard to carry around and handle? Like between battles?

Vee Barlett: Yar! I love 'em! Pa gave me them when I was little. Knew I loved the water. And stabbing. So he gave me somethin' good in water AND stabs multiple times at once!

Inv Zora Polasis: laughs

Vee Barlett: I gots a strong back to hold them.

MeLange: Cool

Vee Barlett: What about yer rapier, Zora?

MeLange: Yea Zora spill it

Inv Zora Polasis: Also not an exciting story

Inv Zora Polasis: I'm not a fighter but the church demanded I become skilled in something to defend myself

Inv Zora Polasis: So I went to the church's armory and walked around for a while and thought the rapier somehow fit me

Vee Barlett: They don't take no punches? 'Cause ya good at that.

Inv Zora Polasis: laughs

Inv Zora Polasis: I think I got lucky with that

MeLange laughs awkwardly

Vee Barlett: One way to find out. Gotta punch more things.

Vee Barlett: grins

MeLange: Sounds like it was calling you

Vee Barlett: Rapier nice and elegant. Gotta see more of yer work to see if it fit you, but I got a hunch it does.

Inv Zora Polasis: Perhaps it was. I passed my training anyway so that was good

MeLange: not a great name though “rapier,” sounds like an above average nasty fella

Vee Barlett: laughs

Inv Zora Polasis: laughs

MeLange laughs

MeLange: I think it's clear that Vee wins the away for most exciting story, but I did like yours Zora, something magical about it

Vee Barlett: Well if their origin story ain't excitin' just means ya got lots of potential excitement in the future.

Inv Zora Polasis: Yours is too MeLange. You may have started chopping wood, but that battle axe is much more than a wood tool. It is yours and you master it

Vee Barlett: Just gotta write the big break later.

MeLange: Thanks Zora that's a nice way to look at it

MeLange: So alone!

MeLange: Almost as if my loneliness is killing me

MeLange: more than any monster ever could!

Vee Barlett: Hey Melange, how 'bout we lower the anchor for the night? Lirt can get us movin' when she wakes up.

Vee Barlett: Just gotta toss this here down.

Vee Barlett: Then Zora and I can flip a coin to see who gets to sleep.

MeLange: I could keep an eye out on my own if it helps though

MeLange: 2 eyes is better than none I would think

Vee Barlett: Nah, I agree but Roth ain't budgin' and it annoyin' me. He supposed to be on watch with ya.

Vee Barlett: Zora, ya wanna stay up or...?

MeLange: you could draw something funny on his face?

Vee Barlett: Already done.

Inv Zora Polasis: I can if you need me to

MeLange: I could think of a few things

Vee Barlett: Yar, keep Mel company. I'll try to wake Rothuss in the meantime.

Vee Barlett: goes below deck again to try to wake Rothuss.

Vee Barlett: draws more things on his face

MeLange giggles

2nd Watch – Rothuss, MeLange and Zora

Inv Zora Polasis: So MeLange, how did you learn so much about animals?

MeLange: Hmm, spent a lot of time in the library reading up on them actually

MeLange: but I think it's that I had the interest before I ever got to the library

MeLange: that sort of got me there, they're lives just, not easy, but simple

MeLange: their lives...

MeLange: Plus animals can be hilarious, like a really good time

Inv Zora Polasis: You are a library scholar and a warrior? I am impressed

Inv Zora Polasis: smiles

MeLange: Don't know I'd go that far, but I do appreciate

Inv Zora Polasis: that is nice. It is always good to study what you enjoy

MeLange blushes slightly

Inv Zora Polasis: Most warriors that interact with the church can't even write their own name. So yes you are impressive

MeLange laughs

MeLange: I do find I benefit from low expectations

MeLange: So how did you get into the religion game?

MeLange: something you were born into?

Inv Zora Polasis: laughs

Inv Zora Polasis: I suppose I was. I was dropped off at the church for an education. So almost born into

MeLange: Quite the education

Inv Zora Polasis: It was nice

Inv Zora Polasis: I can't argue that the church did not take care of me

Rothuss Carder: Are we there yet?

MeLange: You know people say a lot of nasty things about the church, which I'm sure are true, but they also have those good things about em, the taking care of people, that's not something to disregard so easy

MeLange tries not to laugh at the sight of Roth

Inv Zora Polasis: looks over at Rothuss and jaw drops slightly

MeLange a slight chuckle lets loose

MeLange: Oh hey Roth

MeLange: finally up huh?

Inv Zora Polasis: tries not to look at Rothuss

Inv Zora Polasis: I agree. They are a bit controlling but they have good intentions

MeLange: what do you think about intentions Zora?

Inv Zora Polasis: That ... they should be good

Inv Zora Polasis: starts laughing

MeLange: But I was once told that all villains have good intentions

Rothuss Carder: What are we talking about?

MeLange: intentions

MeLange doesn't look directly at Roth

Rothuss Carder: [CHECK] Wisdom (vs. Target 9) [SUCCESS by 7] [d20 = 2]

Rothuss Carder: Right... what's so funny?

Inv Zora Polasis: I don't necessarily agree with that. They may have selfish intentions that are good for them but I don't believe they are inherently good intentions

MeLange: Don't know what you mean Roth

MeLange clears throat

MeLange: Hmm ok

Inv Zora Polasis: Maybe you should have woken when Vee tried to wake you

Rothuss Carder: Why start now?

MeLange: Sometimes we sleep in Roth, and we pay the price for it

Rothuss Carder: So, what'd she do?

Rothuss Carder: yawns

MeLange: I don't have the heart for it Zora

MeLange: not it!

Inv Zora Polasis: laughs

MeLange thumb to nose

Inv Zora Polasis: You feel all right, yes?

Rothuss Carder: I think so. *checks body and clothes*

Rothuss Carder: rubs his face and hair

Inv Zora Polasis: Nothing happened that a good wash up wouldn't fix

Rothuss Carder: nods.

Rothuss Carder: Okay, will do. Needed a bath anyways.

Rothuss Carder: saunters over to the water bucket and starts washing up.

MeLange: don't you saunter

Rothuss Carder: saunters even harder

Rothuss Carder: nay, he even breaks into a strut the last few steps before the barrel.

Rothuss Carder: Anybody got a mirror?

Inv Zora Polasis: are your swords cleaned?

Inv Zora Polasis: I don't have a mirror

Next week we’ll continue with Lirt and Temp on 3rd Watch

then sailing into Mizzen to meet the Duke
