Miranda's Diary

As the group heads out to deal talk to the widow with the haunted house to find the Gremlins Miranda is pulled aside quietly as they leave town. Hello there Miranda, I am Sergent Snowfoot Heckline. I am glad to have caught you in time. This is Denib Dae. He was to join your Fledgling Squad but I was borrowing him to be my aide; when all hell broke loose during the fight. We have been traveling back and forth trying to account for the whereabouts of most of the others. I will leave him here with your group and I will come back to visit you at the Jistille Estates with Corporal Antero Hortswaff in the next day or two - as soon as I find him.

Sergent Heckline then leaves to the west with the easy trot of an experienced long distance runner. As Miranda and Denib quietly talk and she starts to explain what has been happening in the past couple of months a loud scream erupts from up ahead by a small temple on the side of the road.

It is the morning that the group is destined to go out into the swamp to investigate the fisherman seemingly turned to stone in his boat.

As plans are being made, Branwyn catches Indigo’s arm and leans down to look Indigo directly in the eyes. “Before we move out, we must speak. I have no idea what sort of creature may have done this. But we must be more cautious that we have ever been before.”

Indigo starts to speak up to reassure Branwyn, but before he can get his words out, she cuts him off. “No, Indigo. Believe me, I do not question your bravery or your skills as a swordsman. It has nothing to do with that. It’s just that if you are turned to stone, I do not have the power to restore you. I will not be able to save you,” Branwyn’s words caught in her throat. She had not realized until then how fond she had become of her new friend.

“But… but Miss Miranda. She is very powerful. She has healed me the many times I have been hurt. Surely she could do something.”

“No, Indigo. I do not believe she can heal you in this case. So, the only solution for us is not to be turned to stone in the first place. We shall not look up at all when we are out there. Our heads will be down and our eyes must be closed as much as possible, especially when we are in the water. I think the water is where the danger is most great. We shall look only occasionally to get our bearings and then our eyes shall be shut, even as we walk.”

“Pardon me for saying so, but this is ridiculous. I am no woman or child to be mollycoddled. I am a fighter and fighters are no good to anyone if they are running around blind. Besides, I have never heard anyone speak of a swamp creature that could do such a thing!” Indigo was starting to get indignant, but paused when he saw the hurt look on Branwyn’s face.

“Please, Indigo, do as I ask. If I am over-reacting, you make chastise me, get angry or make fun of my worries all you wish and I shall say nothing. If you and I are safe at the end of all this, that is all I care about.”

Indigo sighed and said, “I shall keep my head low and do as you wish.” He turned away, touched the talisman Imari had given him and whispered to himself, “I am not afraid. Partik will watch over me this day.”
