Chapter 5 - Rules of Heraldry

Vassalage

Vassalage is the formal swearing of Homage or Fealty. Called a Commendation Ceremony this is traditionally a formal event meant to mark such a significant change in someone's life.

Swearing Fealty is when a new Lord swears to watch over his subjects upon achieving his or her title.

Swearing Homage is when a person swears one on one to someone.

Typically a Lord will swear Fealty over his subjects when taking his title and then they will receive Homage from significant members of the society. A Duke would swear Fealty over his commoners, while his knights would swear Homage to him. At the same time the Duke would swear Homage to his King.
