With Friends Like These - Out of Character Discussions

There is one thing to consider for this upcoming set of adventures. Time will be of the essence because you have to reach the Cowles Estates by Mid-Summer. That gives you 42 days to solve the problem and get to the Cowles Estates.

One reason I point this out is the first session will involved getting to Portown and the meeting. It is 36 miles to get to the Queen's Channel and your barge and or canoes. Then it is 52 miles by water.

Your normal movement is 6 because of Indigo and Koorin. Everyone else can move 12. That translates to 12 miles per day for Indigo and Koorin and 24 miles per day for everyone else.

This will give you a good idea of what the traveling problems will be.

The first session or two will be getting out of the Jistille Estates and traveling to Portown. Then the meeting there.

Is there any chance of getting horses or ponies for the trip to the queens channel. that will increase our speed for that part, wish there was a faster way of traveling by boat from queens channel to portown but canoes only hold a couple people and with only 1 person really knowing how to use them its wont help speed, barge is slower but I think i might be able to increase the speed a little with some good skill rolls. the leg from channel to town is going to be the longest and possibly slowest part of the trip

Guy

Yes to buying a pony or two. That will not help you move faster but it will help you carry more things. They have a movement of 12 and can carry 160 pounds at that movement rate.

BOB

they can also carry indigo and koorin which means we can move faster which was my hope. so we need at least 3-4 ponies 1-2 for supplies and the other 2 for our halflings.

Guy

You can convince the local farmers to part with 2 ponies at 45 GP each. There are no other ones available. The Spring planting season is over but summer is starting and you are paying a premium to take them right away and use them in the morning. If you bring them back they will buy them back from you at the normal price of 30 GP each.

BOB

What kind of supplies were you thinking of bringing? We only need enough food to get to Portown then we re-supply and put everything on the ship. Can't see needing more than 3 ponies max if any at all. We also have the dwarf to think about if QuiFon is coming. Can't picture dwarves moving much faster than a halfling. We can always just toss the dwarf ahead as we walk though. That would speed up that part of the process.

But my real concern is the swamps. Weren't we needing skiffs or canoes to get through the swamps faster and how does that work with ponies wading through gator infested swamps??

I do appreciate though that you did not suggest Indigo and Koorin share a pony :-)

Guy mentioned splitting the party last session and so I thought I would throw this up here as a starting point for discussion after we defeat the scrags.

We have two places to go. The Vilmar Citadel is only a day away and looks civilized. The map shows lots of buildings so there should be people to deal with and/or sneak around. The vampires are 100 miles away through the swamps so it would seem we will not be out of the mist for long going in that direction. Until we hit vampires we will probably be running into all sorts of lovely creatures of the swamp and various undead.

So what we have to decide is 1) Do we split the party? and if so 2) Who goes where?

Time is a factor so it might be good to split the party to cover ground faster. And it feels like Bob has designed this adventure for us to do just that. (nice roleplay on the IC page btw Bob) I can go either way, but I am a little concerned about time and getting stuck in the citadel too long if we run into problems.

Here are my intital thoughts for doing a party split that might help get the discussion going.

Koorin and Foto have to go in different directions so we have healers in both groups. Koorin and Illero should also go in different groups so we have a thief in each group. Branwyn and Llathandryll go in different groups. Do we even have a priest that can turn undead at this point? And no Miranda doesn't count.

Considering our characters, here is my first take on splitting us up.

Citadel Group: Indigo, Llathandryll, Foto, Illero, QuiFon

Swamp Group: Hoffman, Koorin, Branwyn, Sarengar, Miranda

I put Illero in the Citadel group with the thought that this group will need all the swamp help they can get to catch up with the first group quickly when they head into the swamps.

Thoughts anyone? Or we can talk on Friday. I'm not dead set on this or anything. Think of this as a rough draft.
