Bywater
The third largest town in all of Gold Hills Bywater is also the most cosmopolitan. Hin living with Humans, a small Gnome enclave on the northeast side of The Hill, and frequent Elven visitors. Bree is the only other place that has Humans living as part of a settlement.
Built on the shores of the Big River {the Velikaya River} Bywater is the only significant entry from the outside world into the comfortable lands. A small wide harbor is guarded by the Castle on the Hill that is the Mayor's Seat for the East Shire.
There is a ferry service that makes the 140 mile trip from Bywater upstream and into Terraguard, landing at Easthaven, that carries some trade back and forth across the river. There are some small clandestine and informal docking ports for other trade traffic going up or down stream to other ports. One such port is Undertowers which has its own solution to keeping river traffic stops to a minimum.
Bywater is home to a population of over several hundred people. There are just over 100 humans and an additional 6 gnome familes as part of the community. The Castle on The Hill is a central orientation point. The gnome enclave is 'behind the Hill' meaning the opposite side of the Castle as it looks down on the harbor. 'Around the Hill' (the eastern side of the Castle) and 'Over the Hill' (around the western slopes of The Hill) are just instinctive directions for locals. The area around the shallow water docks attract most of the human workers. On the outskirts of the dock area are a small handful of establishments that cater to a mixed crowd, the Green Inn being one with good food and comfortable lodging for both Hin and Big People. A livelier atmosphere can be found at the Jade Goblet around the Hill.
Farms spread out over the hill to the north and west. The area with the most activity is the western portion of the docks where the larger scale blacksmiths and woodworking shops are.
