Holidays

There is always a desire to take a break from the rigors of work and celebrate. There are also occasions in history that people want to remember and honor. These holidays are listed in the order they occur during the year, with a notation about what parts of the world celebrate them. Some are far reaching, some are small local customs.

Every month starts off with a holiday of some sort that is celebrated and is a day spent not in the normal everyday tasks. There are also holidays scattered through the month in many places, as history and celebrations do not often coincide with the cycle of the moons. The rules for running festival events can be found in Chapter 5 of the rulebook.

The descriptions are: name of holiday date during the year celebrated given in day and month form - where celebrated

This regatta follows the same course of the Regatta di Burano with the primary distinction in this regatta is that all boats competing must have equal male and female numbers in their crew. This tends to create two person teams for quick and mobile racing. Rather than the stronger teams of four where losing one team member means losing a second one teams of two can react quickly and travel through the smaller canals and under certain bridges easier.

Rescue Day 1st Day of the Second month - Trallsow - Gon only

This is a holiday celebrated each year from 1233 TGR onwards in the town of Gon. This day formerly was the Feast of Flowers but was changed to commemorate the rescue of the town by a wandering group of adventurers. The town was almost elmiminated by a horde of goblins but was saved during the Battle of Gon on 1-2-1233 TGR. Many years later when Paul ElvenStier founded his Protectorate his headquarters was Gon in honor of this battle.

It is a day of celebration and remembrance of how the kindness of strangers can affect someone's life. Small favors are often done for those who are traveling through or help given anonymously to others in town.

Festival of the Books - 18th day of the Third month - Seesowtre - Kayugan

This holiday is celebrated every year by the Kayugan church and in particular the priesthood of Cogse. This is the day of the month that Cogse decreed to her followers that they must set aside for reading. This evolved into an annual celebration of the art of the book. In some temples in Terraguard there are exhibitions of books as works of art that have been done by various monks.

Feast of St. Gertrude - 8th day of the Fifth month - Kosinde - Terraguard

This small and not widely celebrated holiday commemorates the day that a simple guardsman in the town of Blot was saved from an attack by cutthroats by a chamber pot dropped on the their heads by a woman; the Gertrude the day is named after. Although she never claimed credit for the thieves capture the local guard remembered her actions. When in a nearby town another rogue was tripped by a carpenters broom as the rogue was fleeing the watch, it was attributed to "being like Gertrude".

The watch in several many small towns celebrates this day with a toast to St. Gertrude and a word of thanks to the common townsfolk who assist them in keeping the community safe. It is partially believed that by keeping the tradition good luck will come to the watch. In larger cities those that celebrate this day are dismissed as believing in country superstitions.

Regatta di Burano - 1st day of the Ninth month - Trallohm - Rivers Bend

This regatta wraps the harvest festival season and kicks off a month long Carnival holiday season. The regatta turns most of the city into a racecourse. This rowing regatta starts at a rope stretched between the Gallows and Bay Landing. The contestants leave from there and need to reach the first mark of Quaytown Point to collect a flag. Then the course continues to Kerner Island to collect the second flag. Next is the Mausoleum of Dusk to collect the third flag. The next challenge is to pass under the Ponte Sesto Punto and deposit the first two flags then race to the finish line between the Gallows and Bay Landing to drop off the third flag. With these points in common participants can travel any of the many canals that lead between each location.
